Job Title: Highway Development Control Officer

This position is within the Highways Development Control Team. The role focuses on overseeing the safe and efficient management of demolition and construction activities associated with approved planning applications.

In April 2023, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets adopted a new Code of Construction Practice, and in October 2023, the Council introduced charges for the assessment, approval, and monitoring of Demolition and Construction Management Plans. The successful candidate will lead a small team handling these new processes.

Requirements include experience in applying relevant Highway and Planning legislation and knowledge of how development impacts the local highway and community. The role entails ensuring all demolition and construction activities are conducted safely, legally, and with minimal disruption to the highway network, its users, and residents.

Reporting to the Team Leader of Highways Development Control, the postholder will collaborate with colleagues in other highway disciplines, Environmental Health, and Planning. Site visits will be necessary to verify compliance with approved documents and planning conditions, and negotiation skills with developers and contractors are essential.

Hybrid working is supported; presence in the office is required as needed.
