Job Description

We are looking to strengthen our engineering team with a Principal Civil Engineer based at Preston. Hybrid working is available, with an expectation to attend sites regularly.

You will report directly to the RDL and your role will be to provide high-quality engineering design services to minimize risks and maximize profits on turnkey and engineering services contracts. This involves coordinating the design and producing design documents and drawings, considering health and safety requirements, specifications, and standards.

Key responsibilities will include:

  1. Producing cost-effective design layouts that meet specifications and are practical for construction and commissioning, considering all associated costs including design, materials, erection, and impacts on other disciplines.
  2. Utilizing standard practices whenever possible.
  3. Maintaining competitiveness.
  4. Providing estimates and feedback for proposals.
  5. Adhering to and developing procedures and processes for departmental development.
  6. Monitoring and reviewing procedures and processes.
  7. Writing, updating, and ensuring the efficiency of procedures to facilitate departmental operations.
  8. Coordinating designs with all disciplines, internal and external, to benefit the overall contract.
  9. Maintaining files and records throughout contract durations.
  10. Ensuring customer satisfaction by recognizing it as key to achieving objectives.
  11. Maintaining a personal development plan.
  12. Supervising and developing staff.
  13. Ensuring a safe working environment.
  14. Minimizing waste from departmental activities.
  15. Considering environmental issues in designs.
  16. Ensuring designs comply with health and safety requirements.

Essential qualifications and skills include:

  • Strong understanding of water and sewage treatment principles.
  • Experience managing staff in relevant design disciplines.
  • Membership of a professional institution / chartered status.
  • Relevant discipline engineering degree.
  • Ability to rationalize designs and produce economical plant layouts.
  • Good knowledge of all aspects of water treatment, including mechanical, process, electrical engineering, and project management.
  • Flexibility and ability to process large amounts of data.
  • Ability to present technical proposals clearly and convincingly.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Driving license.
