Principal Drainage Engineer
Location: Sheffield - 3 days per week non negotiable
Employment Type: Contract (Inside IR35)
Contract Duration: 6 months rolling (long term)
Hours per week: 40

The Opportunity


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Drainage Engineer to join the Consulting Highways team. My client is currently a design partner for the £3.6bn National Highways Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF), the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme ever launched by National Highways. In addition, they support ongoing local projects via the Sheffield PFI contract, improving the city's road network and local infrastructure.

Role Responsibilities


As a Principal Drainage Engineer, you will play a critical role in leading technical delivery and mentoring junior engineers across a variety of drainage and highways schemes. Your responsibilities will include:
Acting as technical lead and providing guidance across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
Leading the preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings, and technical documentation
Ensuring delivery meets standards for quality, cost, and programme
Managing budgets and ensuring the commercial success of your projects
Attending client meetings, presenting proposals, and responding to technical queries
Leading and contributing to bid preparation and work-winning activities
Championing health and safety and ensuring compliance across projects

What You'll Bring


Significant experience within drainage, highways, or civil infrastructure design, ideally at Senior or Principal level
Strong ability to deliver and check engineering designs aligned with current technical standards
Proficiency in design tools such as MicroDrainage and/or Causeway Flow, with a solid understanding of Civil3D
Experience managing health, safety, and welfare under CDM regulations and Integrated Management Systems
Able to act as Contractor's Engineering Manager (CEM) or Principal Designer on appropriate schemes
Proven ability to manage and lead multidisciplinary design teams and coordinate delivery across locations
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or equivalent professional accreditation)
