Job Description
Principal Design Engineer (Ground Specialist)

As a Principal Design Engineer your role will include but is not limited to the following;

  • Compliance: Work to & within the Mackley company procedures, policies & regularly communicate with your line manager. Provide feedback on procedures as & when appropriate.

  • Design Development: Develop temporary and permanent works designs for both tender stage and contract delivery stages, including shoring, foundations, and ground stability analyses.

  • Supervision and Management: Provide guidance and supervision to less experienced design team members and manage external design support.

  • Technical Review: Check calculations, drawings, and technical reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with relevant standards.

  • Client and Team Collaboration: Build and continue to develop strong working relationships with clients, both internal and external, designers, and consultancies. Use these relationships to improve design outcomes and identify additional work opportunities.

  • Compliance and Documentation: Maintain compliance with relevant procedures and provision of documentation for QHSE and CDM. Ensure design information is timely and of the right quality and level of detail for its purpose.

  • Innovation and Development: Actively seek and promote modelling and BIM procedures within the project team. Keep up to date with advancements in design, digital technology, and new software.

  • Influence: Be proactive and influential in the success of the company.

  • Continual Improvement: Keep up to date with advancements in design, digital technology, and new software.

  • Building Information Modelling: Ensure that BIM and our CDE is fully integrated into all business processes.

The company may, from time to time, require you to undertake duties other than those outlined in this job description and/or to undertake work in other departments/sites to meet customer demands.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Commercial awareness (NEC4 & JCT)
  • Compliance with QHSE legislation
  • Compliance with specifications, standards & design
  • Technically competent in Structural Design & Geotechnical works
  • Understanding of the certified management systems ISO 9001 -2015, ISO 14001- 2015 & ISO 45001 - 2018
  • Experience in supervising and managing junior team members, providing technical guidance, and ensuring high standards of work.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building and maintaining relationships with clients and team members.
  • Thorough understanding of H&S, construction techniques, construction plant, products and innovation, environmental constraints, and licensing requirements.
Experience
  • Proven experience in temporary works design, including shoring, foundations, and ground stability analyses.
  • Proven experience in interpreting ground information for soil stability analyses and current piling practices.
Technology skills
  • Competent with AutoDesk software packages (AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Revit, Infraworks, Navisworks).
  • Working knowledge of BIM (Building Information Modelling).
Qualifications and Training
  • Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer with ICE or equivalent
