Further information about the Department of Economics is available from the department's website at The Department of Economics wishes to appoint Teaching Assistants for the 2026/27 academic year. The purpose of this job is to support teaching and learning in our modules, working with the academic modules leads through the delivery of small group teaching for students taking modules in the Economics Department.

About the role

The main duties will be agreed between the Teaching Assistant and the module lead. The workload will include allowances for tutorial class teaching including preparation time, regular meetings with the course lecturer, provision of feedback to students, a weekly office hour and two office hours in Term 3, supporting lecturers in designing and delivering online teaching and learning activities such as attendance reporting on Moodle (UCL's virtual learning environment), coursework assessment and assessment marking. Teaching Assistants will be given training in support of their roles and are required to attend compulsory training sessions. In some cases, teaching on one module across all terms will give you the equivalent hours of a full Teaching Assistant post. In other cases, you may need to teach across modules to make up the hours, given variation in module cohort size and requirements of the lecturers. The successful candidate(s) will ordinarily have, or are currently pursuing a postgraduate degree (PhD or equivalent), preferably in Economics or a related subject. We also welcome applicants from excellent graduates of our UCL Economics BSc and/or MSC programmes with suitable academic qualifications and a proven interest in economics research and teaching (eg, currently pursuing a Masters). Previous teaching experience is desirable. We are seeking to recruit part time Teaching Assistants for a number of hours equivalent to 6 hours per week over 12 months, with teaching happening in Term 1 and Term 2, and additional assessment support directly at the end of these terms (MSc Finance) and in Term 3 (BSc and MSc Economics). Details of UCL's term dates for 2026/27 can be found here. Note that the MSc Economics degree does not have a Term 2 Reading Week and the MSc Finance degree has Reading Weeks in neither Term. You would need to commit to be available, on days and times allocated to you by the Department, for all three terms. You can apply for a full TAship, 6 hours per week over a year, or a one and half TAship being 4 hours, or a half TAship being 3 hours across the year. The appointments will be made on a Grade 6, point 22 (currently £19.14 per hour inclusive of London Allowance). Teaching Assistants are expected to be able to commit to be present on the Bloomsbury campus during the terms for which teaching is allocated and during the Term 3 assessment period if required. Teaching Assistants also need to be confident switching, potentially at short notice, to delivering their duties online should circumstances change and we are not able to teach small groups face to face.

About you

The successful candidate(s) will ordinarily have, or currently pursuing a postgraduate degree (PhD or equivalent), preferably in Economics or a related subject. We also welcome applicants from excellent graduates of our UCL Economics BSc and/or MSC programmes with suitable academic qualifications and a proven interest in economics research and teaching (eg, currently pursuing a Masters). Previous teaching experience is desirable.

• Act as a main point of contact for tutorial class teaching (in groups of approximately 15 - 17 students but can be larger for core modules)
• To design and prepare teaching material (face to face or online) within the overall module framework, this will involve proactively planning delivery of teaching, generating material for tutorials and liaising with other members of the module team to share best practice and ensure consistency
• Marking student assessments, generating and providing detailed feedback for students. Tailoring feedback as needed to ensure students clearly understand what is required of them;
• To monitor student progress, achievement and attendance returning data to the administrative office in a timely manner;
• To generate and deliver formative feedback directly to students
• To undertake a weekly office hour for student enquiries for each module taught during the term taught plus two additional hours in term 3 prior to the examination;
• Examination marking duties (in term 3). Students will be expected to be available during the exam period which is typically from end of April to end of June and may be needed for the Late Summer Assessment period in August;
• Attendance in lectures for the courses taught via moodle (can be waived at discretion of lecturer, for example, if it is a course taught in previous years);
• Participation in regular meetings via Teams and Zoom with the course lecturer to discuss arising issues and problems;
• Participate in the module delivery team assisting the module lead in the collection and review of module feedback
• Involvement in ad hoc meetings organized by Lecturers or the PGTA Administrator/Representative;
• To actively follow and promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities;

• To engage with all training required to support the role.
