Job Description
Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided appropriate professional training
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
  • They are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs

  • Physical Requirements: This position requires light carrying (under 15 pounds), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking/standing (up to 4 hours), and ability to distinguish basic colors/shades

Duties
  • Portland is a port city in the Pacific Northwest and the most populous city in Oregon; situated in the northwestern area of the state at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers
  • Portland is known for amenities of a major city and the charms of a small city with arts, culture, and outdoor opportunities
  • Duties include providing direct patient care in a hospital setting to adults with acute and chronic medical conditions and serving as a consultant to other physicians
  • Experienced in production and interpretation of diagnostic radiologic studies using sub-modalities including computed tomography, general radiography, fluoroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasonography
  • Reads studies using a PACS system with a voice recognition dictation system and interfaces with the electronic medical record and Radiology Information System
  • Functions as a member of a larger team of staff radiologists
  • Specialized fellowship-trained physicians may be assigned supervisory responsibilities for their subspecialty and may serve as the primary radiologist responsible for policy, procedures, education, and training
  • Appointed to the Imaging Service will be eligible for academic appointment with the affiliated Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) and will provide education, training, mentoring, and supervision to radiology residents as part of a shared residency program with OHSU
  • Will be encouraged to pursue research related to radiology or nuclear medicine and participate in educational lectures and conferences sponsored by the Portland VA Medical Center and OHSU
  • Expected to seek an academic appointment with OHSU
  • Provides education and training to members of the medical staff through conferences, committees, and lecture series
  • May be assigned administrative or managerial responsibilities through participation in clinical, educational, and administrative committees, task groups, or special projects
  • Primary work location may be at the Portland VA or the outpatient imaging clinic in Vancouver
  • Takes turns rotating into the evening shift, weekend day shifts, and holidays with after-hours on-call rotations
  • Call is supported by OHSU residents
  • Additional Requirements: Board certified, fellowship trained, and holds an unrestricted state medical license
  • Proficient, credentialed, and capable of performing the full gamut of general diagnostic imaging and image-guided procedures and non-vascular interventions
  • Subspecialty or additional training in nuclear medicine or body/chest imaging is a plus
  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
