Job Title: Personal Skills Assistant
Location: College in West Yorkshire, EnglandHours: 30 hours per weekContract: Temporary, Term-Time Only About the RoleWe are seeking a compassionate, proactive and dedicated Personal Skills Assistant to support learners with learning difficulties, disabilities, and sensory impairments.This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference by enabling learners to access education, develop independence, and achieve their individual goals within a supportive educational environment.You will work closely with tutors and support staff to provide tailored assistance, both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring learners can fully participate in their programmes.Key Responsibilities- Provide day-to-day support to learners under the direction of the course tutor.
- Support learners during taught sessions and at other times as required.
- Deliver personal care support, including intimate care (e.g. toileting, changing) and moving and handling, in line with individual risk assessments.
- Assist in monitoring learner progress, achievement, attendance, and target setting.
- Support learners in building portfolios and completing functional skills evidence.
- Work collaboratively with tutors to develop and implement strategies to meet individual learning needs.
- Advise colleagues on specific learner needs where appropriate.
- Assist with preparing learning materials and equipment.
- Support learner mobility, including access to and from college and work placements.
- Escort and supervise learners where required, including during emergency evacuations.
- Support learners experiencing emotional or behavioural challenges and promote positive social development.
- Maintain accurate student records and contribute to reviews.
- Promote and adhere to safeguarding, equality and diversity, and health and safety policies at all times.
- Participate in relevant training, including Moving and Handling.
- Work flexibly, including occasional unsociable hours if required.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the level of the role.
- Significant experience supporting individuals with learning difficulties.
- Significant experience working with people with disabilities.
- Experience supporting individuals with behavioural needs.
- Recent experience within an educational setting.
- Experience supporting individuals with sensory impairments.
- Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy (or equivalent).
- Moving and Handling certification (or willingness to work towards).
- Disability Awareness training (or willingness to work towards).
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Strong communication skills with both young people and adults.
- Approachable, non-judgemental and empathetic.
- Professional and responsive manner when dealing with learners and staff.
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic about supporting vulnerable learners.
- Reliable, conscientious and respectful of confidentiality.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to follow instructions and use initiative appropriately.
- Problem-solving skills.
- Ability to support learners with literacy, numeracy and IT.
