Job Description

Hays is delighted to be recruiting for an experienced Payroll Officer on behalf of a well-established public sector organisation based in Bedfordshire. This part-time opportunity offers flexible working arrangements and the chance to join a supportive HR and Payroll team responsible for delivering an accurate and compliant payroll service.

Your new role

Working as part of a busy payroll function, you will be responsible for supporting the monthly payroll process, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time. The role involves processing payroll transactions, administering statutory payments, reconciling payroll data, responding to employee queries and maintaining payroll records in line with relevant legislation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Processing payroll transactions including overtime, expenses, additional hours and absence-related payments.
  • Administering statutory payments such as SSP, SMP and other payroll-related deductions.
  • Maintaining employee payroll records and supporting pension administration activities.
  • Completing payroll reconciliations and investigating discrepancies.
  • Responding to payroll queries from employees and stakeholders
  • Supporting compliance with PAYE, National Insurance, RTI and HMRC requirements.
  • Undertaking complex payroll calculations and producing payroll-related reports.
  • Ensuring payroll processes are delivered accurately and within agreed deadlines.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Previous experience working within a payroll environment.
  • Immediate start required
  • Strong understanding of PAYE, Tax, National Insurance, Real Time Information (RTI) and statutory payments.
  • Experience using payroll and time & attendance systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent numerical skills and experience carrying out complex calculations.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills and a confidential, professional approach.
