Job Description

Applicationsare invited for one Specialty Doctor (Trust Grade) post in Paediatric Surgery,equivalent to ST3 to ST5 level. The post is offered for an initial 6-monthperiod, starting no later than March 2026, with the possibility of extension.

ThisPaediatric Surgical Trust Grade Doctor position within the Department ofPaediatric Surgery will be tailored to an individuals training requirement.

Theroutine work includes care of patients in the Leeds General Infirmary,attendance at theatre lists and out-patient clinics where areas of need for subspecialisation will be addressed with their supervising consultant.

Thesewill need to be clearly defined from the outset by the successful candidate.

Thepost is full time and the appointee will be expected to take part in theSpecialist Registrar out of hours rota, currently 1:10. The majority of the outof hours involves general Paediatric surgery, Neonatal surgery and Trauma. Thecandidate will therefore be expected to have background training in PaediatricSurgery to a high level.

Thedepartment provides a wide range of General and specialist Paediatric surgeryincluding minimal invasive surgery and robotic surgery.

These posts would benefit applicants who are committedto a career in Paediatric surgery with (for ST3+) some experience at higher StRgrade or those who have completed their training and desire further specialisttraining in Paediatric Surgical sub-specialties.

Main duties of the job

Thepost holder will participate in a rolling 1:10 on-call rota at registrar level.When on call, they will act as Registrar of the Week from Monday to Thursday,and undertake one 24-hour on-call period with appropriate rest days rostered inline with working time regulations.

Duringon-call periods, the post holder will take senior responsibility for theassessment and management of emergency referrals and all aspects of inpatientcare. They will also undertake emergency operating, with consultant supportavailable at all times, and will liaise with other specialties as required.

Whennot on call, the post holder will contribute to the wider paediatric surgicalservice. This includes regular participation in elective and emergency theatrelists, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, teaching andsupervision of junior trainees, and involvement in audit, research andquality-improvement activities. Training opportunities will be tailored to theindividuals learning needs and the available subspecialty rotations within thedepartment.

About us

TheTrust Grade Dr in Paediatric Surgery is based at the Leeds General Infirmary inWest Yorkshire. This role is suitable for applicants who have Paediatricsurgery experience at a higher level or post CCT or equivalent. It is ideallysuited to candidates wishing to work in a large teaching hospital whichprovides many specialist services and is ideal for anyone wishing gainexperience in various sub-specialties in Paediatric surgery.

Thedepartment provides exposure to all surgical aspects of children ranging from 016 years. This includes general surgery of childhood to highly specialisedskills in fields of Thoracic Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Lower GI Surgery,Hepatobiliary Surgery, Oncology Surgery, Neonatal Surgery and Urology. Thereare 2/3 consultants per specialty providing elective specialty work and allconsultants participate in acute on calls (1:10) to provide general surgery forchildren and trauma service.

Job responsibilities

LEVELSOF RESPONSIBILITY

Thepost holder will support the on-call rota at a level equivalent to ST3 to ST5,working with increasing independence appropriate to their experience whileunder the supervision of the consultant team.

Theywill have the opportunity to work across all key subspecialties withinpaediatric surgery, including complex neonatal surgery, thoracic surgery, uppergastrointestinal surgery, lower gastrointestinal surgery, oncology, urology,minimal access surgery and robotic surgery. Training opportunities will bealigned with the individuals learning needs and the availability within eachfirm, and they will be attached to a subspecialist team accordingly.

ST3+trainees are expected to manage patients with an appropriate level of autonomy,supported by direct or indirect consultant supervision. They will participatein clinics, theatres, MDTs, emergency assessments and inpatient care, taking asenior role where appropriate.

Alltrainees are allocated an educational supervisor within the department tooversee their progression, support their development and ensure trainingobjectives are being met.

Attendanceat the daily morning handover (08:0008:30) and Thursday Morning Grand Rounds(09:30-12:30) is expected unless clinical commitments in theatre or clinic takepriority

Person Specification Additional Requirements
  • Research and audit skills
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements
  • Evidence of involvement in an audit project, a quality improvement project, formal research project or other activity which:
  • focuses on patient safety and clinical improvement, demonstrates an interest in and commitment to the specialty beyond the mandatory curriculum
  • Teaching: Evidence of interest in, and experience of teaching / Evidence of feedback for teaching
  • Instructor status (or a recommendation for instructor status) in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, EPLS, APLS) or equivalent course
Experience
  • Commitment to Paediatric Surgery
  • Previous experience in Paediatric Surgery
  • 12 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
