Operational Support Officer / Court Usher (Part-time)

What you'll be doing- Welcoming everyone to court, including members of the judiciary, juries, solicitors, barristers, the police and the public
- Calling parties into court in priority order, coordinating with Court Clerks and Legal Advisers, and liaising with the Witness Service when required
- Providing information about proceedings, escorting court users in and out of the building, and swearing oaths
- Keeping people updated on changes (including courtrooms and hearing times)
- Collecting and delivering files and bundles to judiciary and clerks, ensuring the necessary papers are in place
- Supporting colleagues and judicial staff outside of hearing times, as needed
- Assisting with court hearings, including room set-up and clearing at the end of the day
- Arranging and supporting hearings, and assisting members of the public attending hearings
- Navigating hearings via video link (onsite and remotely), including a potential CVP element for remote hearings
- Completing general admin tasks such as filing, printing, data entry, typing, and handling incoming/outgoing post
- Preparing court documents, papers and files for hearings, tribunals, trials, and meetings
- A confident, respectful approach and a strong customer service mindset-especially with vulnerable people or those with complex needs
- The ability to manage your time and follow priority instructions in a structured environment
- Clear communication skills when dealing with a wide range of court users
- A practical, helpful attitude-ready to support colleagues and judges both in and out of the hearing room
- Comfortable working in an office-based role with day-to-day administrative support (approx. 10-20% of the role, depending on business needs)
- Computer skills needed to carry out the role, including support for remote/video hearings
- Flexibility to work 3 days 22 hours per week (days are flexible and will be discussed at interview) and cover occasional Saturday shifts on a rota basis
- Enhanced DBS clearance is required and will be processed by Brook Street
- Pay: £12.86 for 12 weeks, then £13.25
- The role is predominantly based at Preston, with occasional travel to Blackburn and Burnley
- Working pattern: fully office based
