Summary

Freedom is currently seeking an OHL Design Engineer to join the electrical services design team based in London or Stowmarket. The role involves working on complex engineering projects aimed at supporting the country's Net Zero targets. Our projects encompass the entire energy system, including generation, transmission, distribution, storage, and load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data, and recycling sectors.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the team lead, responsible for designing and delivering overhead line (OHL) projects, providing technical expertise and guidance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and develop OHL projects, ensuring compliance with safety and technical standards and client specifications.
  • Create technical solutions and advise on all aspects of OHL design, including conductor sizing, insulator selection, lightning protection, and structure and foundation design.
  • Review and approve technical documents such as specifications, drawings, and calculations for accuracy and compliance.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure timely project delivery and quality standards.
  • Support and guide the wider team, including tendering, mentoring, and training junior engineers.
  • Adhere to the quality assurance manual of Freedom/NGB group or established project management methodologies.
  • Participate in site visits, inspections, and meetings as required.

Candidate requirements:

Applicants should possess diverse skills encompassing technical, ethical, social, and management competencies. Strong project management and budgetary skills are essential, along with good commercial knowledge of design and construction contracts like NEC. Experience with contract conditions is also important.

We encourage chartership in engineering, and senior engineers are expected to be chartered or near completion.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in OHL design within power transmission and distribution industries.
  • Strong knowledge of OHL design principles and UK standards.
  • Experience producing designs, calculations, reports, and drawings for OHL projects from 11kV to 400kV.
  • Proficiency with design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Understanding of CDM 2015 and Electricity Safety, Quality, and Continuity Regulations.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD 3D; MicroStation CAD skills are desirable.
  • Full UK driving license.
