Job overview

As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist or Radiographer, you will be part of a friendly and highly skilled multidisciplinary team delivering a full range of Nuclear Medicine services. The role includes working with SPECT/CT imaging, quality assurance of equipment, ordering and handling radiopharmaceuticals, and the safe preparation and administration of doses by injection, inhalation and ingestion.

You will play an important role in maintaining high standards of patient care, image quality and safety, while supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the service. The post also includes regular training, audit and review of skills, alongside participation in updating departmental documentation and ways of working.

Main duties of the job

• Undertake a full range of routine and specialist Nuclear Medicine and SPECT/CT imaging in line with departmental protocols and best practice.
• Position patients, gamma camera and couch or other support equipment safely and effectively, taking account of patient comfort, manual handling requirements and image quality.
• Select the appropriate camera mode and carry out imaging procedures accurately and efficiently.
• Perform a full range of routine and specialist Nuclear Medicine image processing using departmental software and systems.
• Contribute to quality assurance of equipment and maintain safe, accurate working practices.
• Support the ordering, dispensing and administration of radiopharmaceuticals, including delivery by injection, inhalation and ingestion where appropriate.
• Maintain and develop knowledge and skills through ongoing training, continuing professional development and audit.
• Work in accordance with the relevant legislation and professional guidance, including IRR17, IR(ME)R 2017, Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016, transport regulations and ARSAC guidance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary Nuclear Medicine team, contributing to the delivery of a safe, efficient and patient-focused imaging service. The role involves undertaking a full range of routine and specialist Nuclear Medicine and SPECT/CT examinations in line with departmental protocols, while maintaining high standards of image quality, patient care and radiation safety.

The post holder will be responsible for preparing, handling and administering radiopharmaceuticals as required, including administration by injection, inhalation and ingestion, and for supporting the safe use and management of radioactive materials. A sound understanding of the legislative framework governing Nuclear Medicine practice is required, including IRR17, IR(ME)R 2017, Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016, transport regulations and ARSAC guidance.

The role includes quality assurance of equipment, accurate image acquisition and processing, maintenance of records, and regular participation in audit and skills review. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the updating of departmental documentation and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring that practice remains safe, effective and evidence based.

You will work closely with colleagues across the department to support service delivery, manage workload priorities, and provide reassurance and information to patients before, during and after their examination. The role requires a calm, adaptable and professional approach, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team.

Main responsibilities

• Undertake a full range of routine and specialist Nuclear Medicine and SPECT/CT imaging in accordance with departmental protocols and best practice.
• Position the patient, gamma camera and couch or other supporting equipment safely and effectively, taking account of manual handling principles and optimum diagnostic outcome.
• Select the appropriate gamma camera mode of operation and perform imaging procedures accurately and efficiently.
• Carry out routine and specialist Nuclear Medicine image processing using the imaging computer and associated software.
• Participate in quality assurance of equipment and help maintain safe, reliable and well-documented working practices.
• Order, dispense and administer radiopharmaceuticals where appropriate, including administration by injection, inhalation and ingestion.
• Maintain and handle radioactive materials safely and in accordance with statutory and departmental requirements.
• Contribute to regular training, audit, competency review and continuing professional development.
• Support the updating of departmental documentation, protocols and procedures.
• Ensure all work is undertaken in compliance with radiation safety legislation, local rules and Trust policies.
• Provide a professional, compassionate and informative service to patients, carers and colleagues.

Person specification

• BSc (Hons) Radiography / DCR (R) or accepted international equivalent
• Proven acumen for approaching all situations with an open mind and 'can-do' attitude
• Able to work well in a complex team
• HCPC registration RCT registration
• Good communication and interpersonal skills; may need to communicate sensitive or complex information to all types of patient
• IV cannulation trained and competent
• Exposure to specialist techniques
• Previous experience of communicating in difficult circumstances
