Job overview

Fully qualified Plumber; City and Guilds Advanced standard or equivalent NVQ level 3; recognised apprenticeship or modern training to an equivalent standard.

Responsible for maintaining safe and continuous operation of mechanical, electrical engineering services and building plant, providing maintenance, repair and installation services responsive to user needs. Demonstrate leadership, planning, organisation and coordination with trade groups and contractors.

Main duties of the job
  • Maintain mechanical services including heating systems, pipework, pumps, air handling units, ventilation units, and plate heat exchangers.
  • Apply knowledge of steam heated calorifiers for heating and hot water.
  • Interpret technical detailed manuals, diagnose faults using cause effect analysis, repair and test complex Trust Engineering installations, plant and equipment, and building elements.
  • Assist in commissioning, problem solve new technical services and communicate technical knowledge to colleagues.
  • Possess a full driving licence.
  • May be required to join emergency cover rota after probation, which may include unsocial hours.
Detailed responsibilities
  • Carry out maintenance work within a safe environment and to high quality across all engineering services, plant, equipment, and building fabric.
  • Plan and organise maintenance work associated with the post holder's responsibilities.
  • Use the Facilities Management Information System and adhere to all managerial requirements.
  • Maintain records of work carried out in accordance with working practices.
  • Ensure security of all plant, equipment and buildings under the jurisdiction of the Maintenance Department.
  • Supervise, communicate and develop maintenance support workers, assessing quality of work.
  • Provide professional supervision, induction training for new starters, apprentices and other maintenance staff as part of a Personal Development Programme.
  • Carry out building fabric installation improvement works.
  • Drive Trust vehicles for collection and delivery of maintenance items in accordance with the Trust Transport Policy.
  • Undertake training to acquire new techniques across core trade areas.
  • Support, advise and implement Policy and Safe Working Procedures.
  • Act as a member of the Hospital Fire and Major Incident Team.
  • Assist in the statutory testing programme to ensure compliance with current legislation.
  • Work safely in potentially hazardous, confined or contaminated areas following Health and Safety Policies.
  • Report building, plant, and equipment failures and request supplies for goods or services.
  • Assist in maintaining stock levels.
  • Liaise with wards and department staff to specify complex and routine work accurately, meet user needs, and complete within agreed priority response periods.
  • Respond promptly to unpredictable incidents and emergency requests via Hospital Bleep and mobile communications.
  • Assist in site based surveys, reporting defects, and ensure full utilisation of the Building Management System.
Education
  • Recognised City and Guilds Advanced Craft certification or equivalent and significant post apprenticeship experience.
  • NVQ level 3 maintenance engineering or equivalent.
  • Current UK driving licence.
  • Recognition or pursuit of BTEC/HNC recognised qualification or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognised supervisory, leadership or management qualification.
  • Relevant accredited NVQ and NHS technical qualifications.
Experience
  • Demonstrated competence in required technical aspects of the post.
  • Minimum twelve months in a maintenance craft role within a large site environment with completed recognised building/engineering apprenticeship.
  • Ability to understand detailed procedures, technical drawings and diagrams and diagnose faults.
  • Ability to manage priorities under pressure and problem solve to fit for purpose standards.
  • Ongoing training across traditional trade groups.

  • Clear and accurate written and verbal communication skills, including effective listening.
  • Ability to relate to people at all levels within and beyond the Trust.
