Job Description

Reports to: Project Manager (Engineering)

Location: London - Heathrow

Contract: Permanent

Introduction to role

We are looking for an Engineer with the passion and willingness to engineer and develop designs for projects, follow challenging standards, and add value to our customers at home and abroad.

This role suits someone with a specialist, technical, and administrative background. The candidate should have persistence and enjoy working within a highly structured environment. Routine tasks, seeing projects through to completion, and working in a systematic manner are key. The role requires adherence to rules and procedures, patience, and hard work. Ideal traits include being routine-oriented, methodical, thorough, compliant, cautious, diplomatic, self-disciplined, and accommodating.

Role Responsibilities

This role will be part of the UK Heathrow team, initially supporting Heathrow projects. Significant customer liaison and on-site presence are required, so remote work is not an option. The role includes support from and to the Voice engineering teams, aligned with RoUK&I strategy. Local resource management at Heathrow is necessary.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a Mechanical/Layout/Project Engineer with a graduate degree or HND, and at least 2 years of experience in automated material handling systems (e.g., baggage, parcels, warehouse conveyors).
  • Ensuring mechanical system designs meet safety standards and CDM regulations, including detailed risk assessments.
  • Proficiency in 2D & 3D AutoCAD; experience with Navisworks, Revit, and BIM is advantageous.
  • Exposure to building interfaces, services, steelwork, and mezzanines.
  • Creating layouts and documentation for site installation teams.
  • Strong equipment knowledge for accurate specifications.
  • Risk assessment and mitigation of project uncertainties.
  • Knowledge of machinery safety standards for operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently or in teams, taking responsibility for designs.
  • Coordinating designs with customers and Vanderlande disciplines.
  • Engaging in ongoing learning about processes and equipment.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and abroad for site support.
  • Presenting design options confidently to teams, customers, and consultants.
  • Ensuring designs are within budget and manufacturable.
  • Supporting mechanical activity planning and split-up.
  • Protecting Vanderlande's interests in dealings with stakeholders.
  • Managing third-party equipment supply and integration.
  • Continuously improving personal and organizational processes, policies, and procedures.
Role Qualifications and Skills
  • Relevant engineering degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Good knowledge of design standards and safety requirements; familiarity with Machinery Directive preferred.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary environments (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Safety).
  • Structured problem solver with an open approach to design.
  • Flexible working hours and locations.
What we offer
  • 28 days annual leave (excluding public holidays).
  • Bupa Medical Cover.
  • YuLife wellbeing membership with GP access and health promotions.
  • Opportunities for career progression in a challenging environment.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Pension with Aviva.
  • Access to Achievers recognition platform for employee rewards.
