Maintenance Lead
About the Role
The Maintenance Lead is responsible for leading and managing maintenance engineering operations while developing technician capability in structured troubleshooting, fault diagnosis, and reliability-driven maintenance.
This role combines strategic maintenance management with hands on technical leadership to ensure high standards in safety, quality, cost, reliability, and performance. Acting as both a technical authority and people leader, the Maintenance Lead oversees maintenance execution, supports problem solving during equipment failures, and drives continuous improvement across the maintenance function.
How you will contribute:Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, supervise, and develop the maintenance technician team
- Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching, feedback, and training plans
- Assign tasks and monitor team performance against KPIs
- Mentor technicians in diagnostic thinking and structured problem solving
- Promote use of troubleshooting tools and best practices
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, quality, and continuous improvement
- Lead by example to maintain high standards of workmanship and professionalism
Technical Leadership & Troubleshooting
- Provide technical guidance and hands on support for equipment issues
- Lead structured fault diagnosis and root cause identification
- Ensure focus on eliminating root causes rather than symptoms
- Act as escalation point for complex or recurring failures
- Support equipment installations, upgrades, and engineering projects
- Coordinate shutdowns, turnarounds, and maintenance outages
Work Order Management & Planning
- Manage planning and execution of maintenance work orders
- Coordinate with planners and schedulers to optimise workflows
- Ensure work is completed on time, within budget, and to quality standards
- Review and approve maintenance documentation for accuracy
- Align maintenance activities with production to minimise downtime
- Track corrective actions through to completion
Reactive & Corrective Maintenance Governance
- Ensure breakdown and reactive maintenance is executed safely and efficiently
- Maintain high quality documentation of failures and corrective actions
- Prevent repeat failures through proper root cause analysis and follow up
Reliability & Performance
- Support root cause analysis and reliability improvement initiatives
- Monitor KPIs such as uptime, PM compliance, and maintenance backlog
- Identify and implement process improvements
- Collaborate with reliability engineering to optimise maintenance strategies
- Improve preventive maintenance plans and technical documentation
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with GMP, EHS, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain accurate records in CMMS (e.g., SAP)
- Support audits, inspections, and quality systems (Deviations, CAPAs)
Cost & Resource Management
- Monitor and control maintenance costs
- Optimise labour utilisation and eliminate inefficiencies
- Manage spare parts and coordinate with stores
- Oversee contractors and external service providers
Continuous Improvement
- Drive consistent standards in troubleshooting and maintenance practices
- Encourage technician involvement in improvement initiatives (e.g., FMEA)
- Promote a strong learning and continuous improvement culture
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work closely with Operations, Planning, Reliability Engineering, and vendors
- Communicate clearly on breakdowns, risks, and corrective actions
- Support cross functional problem solving
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with safety standards and procedures
- Promote safe systems of work, including lockout/tagout
- Identify and escalate safety risks promptly
What you bring to Takeda:
Essential:
- Technical diploma, apprenticeship, or trade certification (Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation)
- Minimum 5 years of maintenance experience, including 2 years in a leadership role
- Experience with CMMS systems (preferably SAP PM)
- Knowledge of GMP in regulated environments
- Ability to read technical drawings (P&IDs, electrical schematics)
- Strong troubleshooting experience in industrial/manufacturing environments
Desirable:
- Engineering degree or equivalent
- Experience with PLCs, automation, and control systems
- Knowledge of Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM)
- Project management experience
- Experience in regulated industries (pharma, medical, food)
