About the role

Job Title: Logistics Manager - Marine & Multimodal Operations

Location: Central Belt, North East Scotland, or Isle of Lewis

Company: Balfour Beatty - Regional Scotland

Project: ASTI - Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment

The Lewis Hub Project is part of SSEN Transmission's Western Isles HVDC Link, and Balfour Beatty has been allocated major delivery responsibility, which focuses on the 2GW HVDC Converter Station and associated civil and building works on the Isle of Lewis.

What you'll be doing

We're looking for a Logistics Manager with strong marine and multimodal supply chain expertise to lead supplier-to-site operations on a major infrastructure project connecting mainland Scotland to the Isle of Lewis.

This is a career-defining opportunity to take ownership of logistics strategy across land and sea - from goods collection and hub port coordination to vessel movements and final delivery to site.

During pre construction, you may be based in a regional office. Once construction begins, you'll be required to spend extended periods on the Isle of Lewis for the duration of the project.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Construction Director, you will take full responsibility for managing and integrating:

  • Marine transport and freight vessel movements
  • Road haulage from mainland Scotland to hub port
  • Supplier coordination and material call offs
  • Offloading, storage laydowns and uplifts
  • Plant, labour and equipment logistics
  • Site security and temporary infrastructure
  • Haul roads, compounds and shared access routes

You will be the primary interface with our integrated logistics partner and ensure logistics arrangements actively enable - not restrict - construction progress.

Complexities to manage
  • Mainland goods collection consolidation port handling sea freight island distribution
  • Working in island or remote environments
  • Managing logistics across multiple stakeholders, subcontractors and marine operators
Who we're looking for

We're seeking someone with experience from:

  • A major global logistics organisation
  • Defence / military logistics operations
  • Heavy infrastructure or remote civil engineering environments

(Think high volume, high discipline logistics operations - but adapted to a marine construction setting.)

Essential Experience
  • Proven experience managing suppliers, supply lines and deliveries
  • Marine logistics coordination (vessels, ports, multimodal freight)
  • Goods pick up and transport from mainland Scotland to island locations
  • Managing offload, storage and material distribution on site
  • Organising major movements of equipment, people and modular buildings
  • Experience working in remote or island environments
  • Leading logistics and maintenance teams
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering site requirements
Desirable
  • Experience working with integrated logistics suppliers
  • Familiarity with logistics management software
  • Experience in extreme or challenging environments
Why This Role Stands Out

This is not a depot based logistics role.

This is end to end strategic control of:

  • Marine and multimodal freight
  • Site wide logistics systems and controls
  • Security, compounds, temporary works logistics
  • Haul roads, maintenance and operational efficiency
  • Proactive planning to minimise downtime and maximise output

You will play a critical role in ensuring materials, plant and people arrive safely, efficiently and on programme - across land and sea.

Who Will Thrive Here?
  • Enjoys complexity and accountability
  • Is comfortable being on site in a remote island setting
  • Understands freight vessels, port operations and road haulage
  • Can integrate logistics into live construction operations
  • Has worked in disciplined, high performance logistics environments
