Job Description

This new post will support existing services and improvements in Gastroenterology and hepatology in Gateshead. This post will work with consultant colleagues to deliver gastroenterology and/or hepatology services including ward commitment that will support existing gastroenterology inpatient ward cover and gastroenterology outpatient service delivery. The post could support an interest in advanced endoscopy and endoscopy training, nutrition, IBD or hepatology/HPB depending on the area of interest of the successful applicant. The post holder will be expected to participate in GIM and endoscopy on call rotas.

In addition, we offer the opportunity to be involved in teaching and training, research and audit/quality improvement.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

Main duties of the job

This post will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. The post-holder will be responsible for gastroenterology service provision including outpatients, endoscopy and gastroenterology ward inpatients, as well as participating in GIM and out of hour endoscopy rotas.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  • To provide outpatient and inpatient specialist gastroenterology and/or hepatology service including a ward commitment.
  • To participate in an emergency out of hours upper GI bleed endoscopy service.
  • To participate in the general medical rota

Administrative:

  • To participate in audit and clinical governance activity related to gastroenterology in line with local and national guidance and requirements.
  • To participate constructively in departmental meetings.
  • To participate in continuing professional development, annual appraisal and risk management

Research:

  • The post holder will be encouraged to participate in research activity and develop quality improvement and service development projects where practicable

Teaching:

  • The post holder will be involved in undergraduate & postgraduate teaching, including PACES teaching.
  • To provide clinical and educational supervision for Resident doctors
  • There will be the opportunity to act as clinical tutors and academic mentors for medical students
  • Potential opportunity to develop and supervise advanced care practitioners specialising in gastroenterology and hepatology.
Person Specification Education
  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • GMC Registration
  • Higher Degree.
  • Special skills training in the specialty.
Clinical Experience
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
  • Evidence of experience in the specialty.
