Job Description
Overview

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is looking for a full-time 12 month fixed term Stroke Consultant Physician to join an existing team of NHS and academic consultants providing Stroke services to Nottinghamshire and beyond. NUH is a Comprehensive Stroke Centre for the East Midlands and provides Endovascular, Neurosurgical services, 24/7 Thrombolysis and Hyperacute Care. The Trust hosts the Mechanical Thrombectomy Centre for the East Midlands region, with expansion following the business case for 24/7 Mechanical Thrombectomy.

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic and committed team. The Trust is committed to developing the Stroke service to maintain a leading position nationally. The post holder will help develop the existing stroke pathway and provide consultant input to hyperacute stroke, acute stroke, intensive rehabilitation and continuing stroke rehabilitation.

Main duties of the job

The Comprehensive Stroke Centre at NUH comprises:

  • 16 bedded hyper-acute stroke unit at QMC campus
  • 34 bedded acute rehabilitation stroke unit at QMC campus
  • 18 bedded long-term rehabilitation stroke unit at City campus and 6 beds in Connect House (further rehab beds)
  • A 7 day Fast Track TIA clinic
  • 24/7 thrombolysis service supported by telemedicine
  • A regional Mechanical Thrombectomy service
  • Regional Neurosurgical service provision

The Stroke Service currently has six stroke consultants, two academic consultants, one neurologist and one acute medicine consultant, providing a 24/7 service. The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic, passionate team with a specialist interest in stroke care. The post is a full-time (10 Programmed Activities) Fixed Term Consultant Stroke Physician role at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, working across all parts of the stroke service. The stroke service provides 24/7 cover and currently has seven dedicated Stroke consultants and one clinical academic, with contribution from consultant neurologists and an acute medicine consultant.

Programmed Activities (PAs): The job plan reflects 10 PAs, with an initial allocation of 8 PAs Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 SPAs for the first year. The NUH Stroke service provides a 0.5 PA contribution per new Consultant appointment to support unselected and/or generalist needs; this may be provided by the appointee or shared across the service.

  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit.
  • Able to teach and support junior staff effectively.

  • Higher teaching degree or qualification or training
Professional Registration
  • Full GMC registration with Licence to Practise
Professional Qualifications
  • MBBS
  • Full MRCP
  • Higher professional degree
Clinical Skills/Experience
  • Extensive experience in Stroke Medicine.
  • Experience in hyper-acute stroke care and trained in thrombolysis.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current issues in general internal medicine.
  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
Management Skills
  • Proven leadership skills, able to lead a team effectively.
  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
  • Experience of change management
