Job Description

This is a 10PA locum Consultant Nephrologist post, for a 12-month period in the first instance, providing Consultant Renal care at Hammersmith Hospital in combination with Northwick Park Hospital. This model of care delivers seamless collaborative Renal care across NWL and both organisations.

The Renal Directorate at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust provides full nephrology, dialysis and transplant services to NW London and for patients from elsewhere by tertiary referral. The Directorate has 76 inpatient beds at the Hammersmith Hospital, including a 12-bed enhanced recovery area allowing admissions for acute transplantation. There is also an 18-bed day-case facility open 5 days a week. The unit performs on average 160 kidney transplants per year and 12 simultaneous kidney/pancreas per year.

Main duties of the job

This is a 10PA locum Consultant Nephrologist post, for a 12-month period in the first instance. Providing Consultant Renal care at Hammersmith Hospital in combination with Northwick Park Hospital. Duties include a general nephrology clinic and ward in-reach based at Northwick Park Hospital, alongside specialist clinics in vasculitis and polycystic kidney disease based at Hammersmith Hospital. Oncall rota is based at Hammersmith Hospital at a frequency of 1 in 5 weeks.

Job responsibilities

The purpose of this job is to join the Renal Directorate to support the large inpatient and outpatient service at the NWL Renal Regional hub at Hammersmith Hospital along with the delivery of inpatient reviews and outpatient clinics at Northwick Park Hospital.

The post includes a 1 in 5 on-call commitment based at Hammersmith Hospital. Agreed duties when on-call are a Daily morning ward round (8.15am 10.30am) and evening board round (5.30-6.30pm), review of emergency presentations, and telephone calls for all transplant offers in collaboration with transplant surgical team (only when on call for transplant enhanced recovery ward).

This post will support inpatient and outpatient at Northwick Park hospital on one day each week with a focus on general nephrology and inpatient liaison including ITU and acute medicine.

This post will also provide two specialist vasculitis clinics at Hammersmith Hospital, including the exciting development of a novel IgA nephropathy clinic. In addition, the post will include a specialist clinic for people living with polycystic kidney disease.

Qualifications
  • On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC's Specialist Register or within 6 months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • Appropriate Royal College Membership
  • Need to demonstrate excellent academic calibre
Knowledge/ Skills
  • Skills necessary to provide consultant level care in transplantation.
  • IT Skills and computer literacy
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
  • Knowledge of finance/budgets
  • Management of staff
Teaching & Training
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff
Audit
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit
Academic achievements
  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at ICHT.
Language
  • Are able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
