Job Description
Locum Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine

Applications are invited from highly motivated Emergency Physicians to join a multi professional team delivering high quality compassionate emergency care to the people of Cardiff and South Wales. This locum post is part time - working 7 1/2 sessions per week - whilst covering maternity leave of the substantive post holder.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £90,948 per annum for a 7 1/2 session commitment.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last three years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in a post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Unit is situated on the University Hospital of Wales campus and sees a total of 144,000 new patients per annum of which 40,000 are children. All children under 16 years are seen in the co located Paediatric Emergency Unit. There is a full complement of junior medical staff working in the Unit 24/7 with trainees from a number of rotations. We have an Advanced Nurse Practitioner development programme.

We provide Consultant shop floor cover from 0800 to midnight with resident on call cover 24/7. Weekends are worked at a frequency of 1:6 as programmed activity and commensurate time off during the week. Job plans are based on team working and intended to be fair, sustainable and provide good work life balance. Our Consultant rota is annualised and self rostering is negated via a digital rostering system to improve flexibility.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • APLS certification
  • Instructor in one or more ALS courses
  • ETC, ATLS, ALS and NLS certification
Experience
  • Current hands on experience in the management of paediatric emergencies and the full spectrum of presentations to a modern emergency unit
  • Experience of working in a very large department (according to RCEM definitions)
Skills
  • Evidence of effective team and multi disciplinary working
  • Effective and demonstrable communication skills
Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)
Teaching
  • Evidence of teaching medical students and resident doctors
  • Experience of training in simulation environments
Research
  • Able to appraise research critically
Management
  • Evidence of effective leadership skills
