Locum Consultant in Otolaryngology WSI in Head and Neck Surgery

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and forward thinking colleague into the role of a locum Consultant in General Otolaryngology with an interest in head and neck for a fixed 12 month post. This 10 programmed activity (PA) fixed term locum post is created to support the elective recovery and the Head and Neck services within the ENT department. As this is a vacancy within a substantive post, the successful applicant can start as soon as possible.
The Trust has recently opened the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) in October 2024 and is expanding its ENT service.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will join our growing team of consultant ENT surgeons delivering elective and emergency care, including contributing to a 1 in 8 emergency non resident on call rota. The role will involve working across all Trust sites, delivering elective day case and outpatient clinic activity at the Birmingham Treatment Centre (BTC), and providing elective outpatients, inpatient operating and on call activity at Midland Metropolitan Hospital (MMUH). The Department is supported by 2 Clinical Nurse Specialist posts and a team of Resident doctors; 9 specialty middle grades, 4 core training level doctors (1CT, 2GPVTS, 1LED) and three Foundation year doctors. An interest in medical education is welcome and the successful candidate will be encouraged to take on an additional role as an educator. Active engagement in quality improvement activity and research is expected, as well as participation in a postgraduate teaching programme. The department is committed to training undergraduates from the University of Birmingham and Aston University.
Person Specification Qualifications:- FRCS (ORL HNS) or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Otolaryngology (or within 6 months of CCT or CESR at time of interview)
- Higher Degree
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in ENT with wide experience in Head and Neck surgery
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute ENT emergencies and the care of elective ENT patients
- Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
- Ability to plan strategically and exercise sound judgement when faced with conflicting pressures
- Ability to motivate and develop the multi disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
- Experience of conducting clinical audit
- Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision making
- Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines
- Ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff
- Formal training in teaching
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives and issues
- Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to ENT
- Publications in relevant peer reviewed journals within the last five years
- Evidence of having undertaken original research
- Energy and enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure
- Enquiring and critical approach to work
- Caring attitude to patients
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, other staff and agencies
- Commitment to continuing medical education and professional development
- Full GMC Registration with licence to practice
- CCT in Otolaryngology or within 6 months of obtaining it
- Appropriate immigration status (where appropriate)
- Understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
- Residence within a reasonable distance of MMUH
- Ability to undertake clinical commitments at any of the Trust's sites
- Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team
