Job Description

Weare looking for an individual to fill this six month locum post within theOphthalmology Department at St Jamess University Hospital.

Thispost will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Medical Retina team. This post is basedat St James Hospital but may include working at other LTHT sites when required.

Thesuccessful applicant should possess accreditation in Ophthalmology by the RoyalCollege of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth)or equivalent. Senior level experience in Medical Retina will be required. Ifneeded, provision for support to attain CESR qualification can be discussed andarranged.

Applicantsshould have established skills in Ophthalmology. Excellent communication andteam working skills, and a strong commitment to teaching and servicedevelopment are essential. A strongcommitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is desirable.

Considerationwill be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and thosewishing to job share.

Main duties of the job

Thisis a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Ophthalmologist, with specialinterests in Medical Retina.

Thispost will deliver 10PAs supporting the Medical Retina team.

Thepost will be based at St Jamess Hospital, with clinics also held at Seacroftand Wharfedale Hospital.

Todeliver care to patients with Medical Retina Conditions, as well as GeneralOphthalmology/Emergencies:

Supervision of patients

Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings

Tolink with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams withinthe department and across the Trust.

Tocontribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the department.

Thepost-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teachingprogramme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organisedon a speciality or clinical area basis.

Thepost-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliverappropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract withthe NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

Theappointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teachingof postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in Ophthalmology inthe Local Education and Training Board.

Person Specification Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management, effective interpersonal skills and demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
Additional Requirements
  • Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted for trainees (if currently in a UK training programme or have references which have been authorised by the DMD/CD
Qualifications
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
Experience
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Ophthalmology
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Medical Retina
  • Completed at least 4 years of a higher surgical training in ophthalmology
  • Completed at least 12 months of Medical Retina subspecialty training
  • Competent in retinal laser procedures, Intravitreal treatment procedures and managing Medical Retina conditions
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
  • Previous Fellowship in Medical Retina
  • Competence in cataract surgery is desirable
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely
