Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Full Time (10PA) Locum Consultant in General Surgery, with a specialist interest in Colorectal Surgery, at The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford for a fixed period of 1 year. The successful appointee will provide support for the emergency general surgery service and work alongside the established team of five colorectal surgeons as well as the wider General Surgical consultant body.

The successful applicant will have to evidence an interest in, and a commitment to, colorectal surgery and possess well-developed skills in minimal access surgery (laparoscopic or robotic), as well as be JAG accredited to delivery diagnostic colonoscopy. The post holder will be encouraged to contribute and further develop skills as part of a highly supportive colorectal team.

Applicants must be in possession of the FRCS (Gen) or equivalent qualification, and be fully registered with the GMC.

Main duties of the job

The Colorectal Unit here has a national and international reputation in a number of areas of colorectal practice. The main expectation from this appointment are as follows:

  • To support the Trust's delivery of Emergency General Surgery by taking responsibility for 1 in 12 weeks of the general surgery on-call rota.
  • To support more formal colorectal input to pelvic cancer work with the Gynaecological Oncology team as part of a prescribed rota, and the Urology team when required. Cover for gynae oncology will comprise of 2 full day theatre lists per 4 week cycle.
  • To provide one colorectal outpatient clinic per week
  • To 'backfill' colorectal operating lists: (expected to make up 20 all day operating lists per year
  • Attendance at the weekly colorectal MDT, bi-monthly IBD MDT and weekly morbidity and mortality conference.
  • To make full use of the operating, endoscopy and outpatient sessions allocated to the colorectal service to maintain effective delivery of cancer treatment targets and 18 week RTT target.
  • Attendance at Journal Club

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC
  • FRCS (Gen)
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Provider status in ATLS/APLS/ALS or equivalent, or willingness to obtain within 6 months of interview date
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery
  • Higher Degree
  • Instructor status in ATLS/APLS/EPLS/ALS or equivalent
  • Qualification in leadership and/or clinical management.
  • Teaching/Education Qualification
Experience
  • National or international fellowship positions
  • Teaching experience
  • Significant evidence of experience in clinical leadership
  • Understand the principals of Clinical Governance
