Job overview This post is for a Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic Acute Medical Unit (AMU). This is a 10 PA 12 months fixed term post, offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated physician to join an award winning, forward thinking, education oriented, dynamic and multi professional team.
The post will enable the AMU to continue to enhance its early management of emergency medical admissions by strengthening arrangements for the assessment and early management of medical emergencies across the Emergency Department (ED) and AMU, managing medical patients in the early part of their hospital stay including via large embedded Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area and an Enhanced Care area. They will also make a vital contribution to teaching and training in acute medicine. The post holder will also contribute to the out of hours General Internal Medicine Physician of the Day (PoD) rota with a 3% on call supplement.

Acute Care Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.
Primary Care Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.
Community Services Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

- To join the existing Acute Medical Consultants in providing a comprehensive and timely assessment of patients presenting to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), including Same Day Emergency and Enhanced Care
- To contribute to ED outreach work
- To contribute to AMU Outpatient work
- To participate in teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, and Advanced Nurse / Clinical Practitioners and Pharmacists based on the AMU
- To participate actively in both Departmental and Trust Clinical Governance and Audit

- Full GMC registration at time of application
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
- Valid Advanced Life Support (ALS) Provider Status (as applicable)
- Specialty Certificate Examination in Acute Medicine
- MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification
- Demonstrate excellent communication with patients and colleagues
- Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
- Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the Acute Medicine curriculum and applying to this post.
- Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit and/or research within team structure
- Evidence of appropriate teaching experience
- Evidence of relevant academic achievements, e.g. degrees, awards
- Evidence of relevant research e.g. presentations, publications in peer reviewed journals.
- Capacity to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions
- Able to work in multi professional teams
- Able to supervise junior medical staff
- Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively
- Capacity to operate under pressure. Demonstrates initiative & resilience to cope with changing circumstances
