Locum Consultant Cardiologist (interest in Coronary Intervention)

This is a fixed term contract for 12 months, to commence April 2026. Cardiology in East Kent Hospitals is one of the largest services in the South East, and is the regional heart attack centre for the 1.4 million population of Kent and Medway, and is the 7th busiest in the UK.

The PPCI rota involves intervention operators from the other PPCI centres of Kent. We have a comprehensive set of tools at our disposal to optimise the treatment of coronary disease including rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithoplasty, FFR, IMR as well as IVUS and OCT for intravascular imaging.

We are looking for an expert in coronary intervention. This is a fixed term appointment within a team of 18 full time consultants working across the organisation, 8 of which are interventionalists.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time 10 PA position, with additional sessions according to the post holder's skill set.

A typical week includes an outpatient clinic, supporting the rapid access chest and cardiac rehab nurses where required, lab sessions, MDTs and ward over.

There is a 1:9 consultant of the week rota (including weekends), covering WHH and QEQM. Depending on competencies, there is a 1:8 emergency pacing rota.

Person Specification Skills and Experience
  • Experienced in all aspects of clinical cardiology and emergency cardiac care
  • Working NHS experience
  • Interventional cardiology experience satisfying BCIS recommendations
  • Formal interventional training programme
  • Post CCT fellowship with experience in complex coronary interventional techniques.
  • Research degree (MD/PhD)
Qualifications & Training
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS, or graduate of a UK Medical School qualification (MRCP or equivalent)
  • CCT Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date
Clinical Governance
  • Consistently safe and aware of cultural /team/personal influences on safety
  • Reassuringly professional
  • Listens and communicates clearly
  • Understands the role of audit and adverse incident reporting
  • Previous experience of audit/service improvement projects/complaint management
