Working Hours: 8 hours per day Monday to Friday. This equates to 40 hours per week with mandatory overtime taking it up to 50 hours per week if required to complete the daily collections.

Main Purpose and Scope of JobReporting to the Refuse Supervisor.
  • Will be expected to collect and sort glass boxes when required.
  • Duties will include the collection of various wastes, including food, glass, cans, plastic, paper and card and anything else of a similar nature as directed with the Contract Manager.
  • Collections will be loose food caddies and plastic boxes. This will be taken to various tipping points throughout the district.
  • Will be expected to work in the depot when required assisting in cleaning the depot and vehicles (training will be given where necessary).
  • Flexibility is a key aspect of this job.

    All employees to take care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Additionally, employees must also co-operate with the company to enable it to discharge its own responsibilities successfully.
    Duties and Key Responsibilities - SHEQ
    Responsible for personal safety and that of all personnel under his or her authority, including others who may be affected by the company's activities.

    In particular:
    • Carry out assigned tasks and duties in a safe manner, in accordance with instructions, and comply with safety rules/procedures, regulations and codes of practice.
    • If aware of any unsafe practice or condition, or if in any doubt about the safety of any situation, consult the Supervisor.
    • Obtain and use the correct tools/equipment for the work and not use any that are unsafe or damaged. All tools, equipment and personal protective equipment must be stored in the approved place after use.
    • Ensure that all guards are securely fixed and that all safety equipment and personal protective clothing/equipment provided are used.
    • Not operate any plant or equipment unless authorised.
    • Report any accident, near-miss, dangerous occurrence or dangerous condition to line management.
    • Switch off and secure unattended plant or equipment.
    • Avoid improvised arrangements and suggest safe ways of eliminating hazards.
    • Not participate in horseplay or place fellow employees in danger by actions.
    • Adopt a proactive manner to energy usage and suggest ways of improving energy performance.
    Key Responsibilities
    • Work as a member of a team/crew.
    • Observe current legislation and Company safety policies.
    • Wear and care for any PPE that is issued.
    • Operate any equipment as per instruction and training.
    • Load waste/resources in vehicle as per instruction and training.
    • Report any non-conforming wastes on the route.
    • Interact with customers/residents in a polite and courteous manner.
    • Work within the transfer station if required.
    • Report any unsafe acts/incidents and accidents to management.
    • Undertake any training required for the role.
    • Any other reasonable tasks as directed by management.
    Qualifications and Experience (Preferred)
    • Manual handling or any waste industry training would be an advantage.
    • Satisfactory completion of the relevant Competency Management System modules.
    • Completion of all other training as defined within the Training Matrix.
    Personal Attributes and Other Requirements
    • Must be physically fit due to the nature of the work.
    • Knowledge of the East Lothian area would be a distinct advantage.
    • An understanding of Health and Safety in the workplace.
    • Must be prepared to wear PPE uniform that will be provided.
    • Must be reliable and trustworthy.
    • Be courteous to the public.
    • Ability to use own initiative.
    • Previous experience is desirable although full training will be given.
    • Knowledge of the area would be advantageous but not essential.
    • Can carry out clear instructions properly.
    • Flexible attitude towards working additional hours as and when required.
    • Must be willing to undergo additional training.
