As an apprentice, you will develop the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) outlined in the apprenticeship standard. These will be assessed during your End Point Assessment (EPA), where you will demonstrate the competencies and skills you've gained throughout the programme.
Software Engineering pathway Software is a key component of our future cars as the technology in vehicles continues to increase to meet customers' evolving needs. Before the customer enters the car, technology identifies the key fob and their phone to recognise them and allow access. During their journey, software aids their driving with stability and assistance systems and provides a welcoming and refined user experience through in vehicle infotainment. In short, software gives us our edge. It makes our thinking come alive in the real world. This pathway will show you how to design, build and test ground breaking software that really delivers. You'll also learn how to integrate engineering principles that deliver superior analysis, development and built in security.
Along the way, you could work in any of the following functional areas: Digital Platform (DP) or Vehicle Platform (VP). You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process.

WHAT TO EXPECT During your apprenticeship, you'll gain valuable hands on experience and career building skills while working at the forefront of the automotive industry. This exciting programme is designed to help you build practical skills, deepen your foundational knowledge, and develop essential business behaviours such as teamwork and problem solving. And you'll be supported by a JLR early careers cohort leader, the university team, and your line manager every step of the way.

Year 1 - 2 This programme is delivered through a combination of online study, face to face lectures, independent learning each week. This gives you the chance to apply your learning from University of Warwick to projects in a real world environment. You'll study a range of modules designed to build your essential knowledge, skills and behaviours, with regular process reviews along to way to ensure you're getting the support you need from your tutors and line manager.
Years 3-4 In years 3 and 4 you will complete modules related to your chosen specialism - Software Engineering. In your final year, you'll complete a work based project as part of your End Point Assessment (EPA). This is an opportunity for you to use the skills and experience you gained throughout your time on the programme and apply them directly to your role. And when you've successfully completed your EPA, you'll achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship and taking on new responsibilities and making a meaningful impact within the business.
Throughout your apprenticeship you could work in any of the following functional areas: Digital Platform (DP) or Vehicle Platform (VP). You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process.
Digital Platform (DP) - Gaydon DPP delivers smart, connected, clean vehicles through creativity and design innovation and offers opportunities in a variety of digital disciplines including complex systems design and electronic hardware and software creation. The features you may expect, such as cabin interior functions or infotainment but also technologies such as connectivity, off board processing and mobile app design to provide a wider range of customer experience.
The projects worked on will cover a wide scope, as most vehicle functions have a software element including propulsion and energy management systems as well as active suspension control, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment and convenience features such as interior cabin controls.
You could be involved in many different projects from day one, including automation and infrastructure. You could be part of a team implementing a cloud based infrastructure providing the tools and environment for large software teams to work within.
Or you could be working in low level software development ensuring the in vehicle computer systems have the best balance of performance. Low Level boot charts, balancing processor core loading and refining fast boot processes are areas you will focus on to produce the best in vehicle performance.
VEHICLE PLATFORM TEAM - Gaydon, Whitley, NAIC, Solihull The Vehicle Platform team is where engineering meets innovation - delivering world class automotive experiences. We engineer and deliver the core systems that define the customer experience - everything from Body Interiors, Body Exteriors, Body in White, Chassis, EDU, Powertrains and Accessories. We are a large, highly skilled team with a focus on integrating cutting edge technology and engineering excellence to create vehicles that set new standards in performance, comfort and safety.
We're responsible for designing and developing software that runs both inside and outside the vehicle, supporting all the innovative and high tech features a customer expects from a JLR product. We do this with model based software development and directly writing code. This is complemented by developers working in Embedded C and engineers who use a variety of languages, including Python, to build and maintain our DevOps software pipelines. Our role goes beyond writing code-we design how software systems work together and ensure quality through software testing, calibration, and validation. This spans from virtual rigs to in vehicle and real world test environments.
As a Software Apprentice within this team, you'll learn about and be responsible for developing real world engineering solutions, securing JLRs future as a leading provider of premium and sustainable electrified vehicles. You'll learn how to use tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise impressive engineering solutions - working on new products and enhancing our current ones. This role will raise your profile across the business as you collaborate with different stakeholders, accelerating your development as an engineer and preparing you for the engineering landscape of tomorrow.
WHAT'S REQUIRED? To apply you'll need to have achieved GCSE Maths and English Language at level 5 (C) or higher above. You'll also need three additional GCSEs at level 5 (C) or higher, to include one STEM (science, technology, engineering or maths) subject.
In addition, you will need to have achieved or be on track to achieve A-level Maths at grade C or higher and an additional A-level in Physics, Chemistry, Design & Technology, ICT, Computer Science, Economics or Engineering at grade C or higher.
