School of Science

The School of Science brings together three key subject areas; Environmental Sciences, Biomedical and Forensic Science and Psychology. The School has strong links with key external agencies including the University Hospitals for Derby and Burton NHS Trust who support the Biomedical Sciences IBMS provision as well as research collaborations. The School also works with regional forensic science agencies including the police and private forensic science labs as well as numerous environmental agencies locally, nationally and internationally focusing on conservation, habitat management and environmental regeneration.

The Psychology subject area is home to the University's Psychology and Counselling and Psychotherapy provision, delivered at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. As a TEF Gold institution, we are proud to contribute high quality programmes grounded in psychological and behavioural science with a significant focus on applied psychology and professional practice. We provide a large accredited provision across several Professional and Statutory Regulatory Bodies (including the BPS, HCPC, BABCP, BACP, NCPS and CIEHF). Our programmes provide undergraduate underpinnings and initial postgraduate training for some psychological professions, and support progression into careers across sectors such as marketing, business, management and leadership (and many more). Furthermore we offer training in a range of therapeutic modalities across the counselling and psychotherapy provision and contribute to the development of the wider psychological workforce through our NHS based commissioned programmes. In Psychology our provision is underpinned by excellent student support to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students and high quality progression opportunities into a range of careers. Our delivery is further underpinned by high quality scientific research and scholarly activity, with industry informed and based research at the forefront of curriculum developments to ensure programmes are meeting the needs of employers to foster the success of our graduates from across the subject.

We are excited to offer this permanent post to support the delivery of our growing British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited provision in Health Psychology and Psychology. As a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Health Psychology, you will contribute to the delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate health psychology programmes (campus and online), as well as supporting delivery of the wider undergraduate portfolio (e.g., core areas recognised by the British Psychological Society). Our provision is delivered both on campus and online and this role will include delivery across both modes. Objectives of the post holder will be to contribute to the delivery of excellence in teaching across the portfolio, and to contribute to achievement of the highest outcomes for our students through excellent teaching and student support.

Psychology has an active research agenda and growing research profile. You will have the opportunity to engage with and/or support financially sustainable research and/or other appropriate academic and scholarly activity.

The role will include supporting our marketing events (e.g., open days) and outreach (e.g., school visits) which occasionally take place into evenings and at weekends. We do support hybrid working as business needs permit and in agreement with the Subject Lead.

You will contribute to teaching across our excellent provision to enhance its quality and ensure an outstanding student experience. This will be include predominantly health psychology and so the MSc Health Psychology qualification is essential and supports breadth of knowledge of health psychology across the BPS stage 1 curriculum. There will also be a remit to contribute more widely across psychology. As such, there is an expectation of working collaboratively within the Psychology subject area. You will also collaborate more widely across the School of Science, and wider institution across a range of activities such as curriculum delivery and supervision, and to progress the research and scholarship agenda. As such, skills in communication and collaboration are vital. The successful candidate will benefit from support to pursue research in keeping with the University of Derby academic themes, and contribute to our high-quality research profile.

We would especially welcome applications from candidates with expertise in biological psychology and qualitative research methods, although other applications are not excluded. We welcome applications from candidates who are in the final stages of completing their PhD (submitted or awaiting examination).

• Effectively teach and facilitate learning on a range of subjects / modules within the subject area on undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and post-experience programmes.
• Ensure that knowledge from research and scholarly activities informs and enhances learning and teaching, as well as extending it to appropriate external activities such as knowledge transfer activities.
• Ensure that module / programme design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the University.
• Participate effectively in the assessment process, including the setting, marking and moderation of student work, providing constructive feedback and ensuring it is in accordance with quality assurance procedures.
• Participate in the continuing review and development of module/programme delivery, incorporating innovative study modes, learning environments and pedagogic practices to engage and stimulate students, deliver effective learning outcomes and develop the skills and attributes of the 'Derby Graduate'.
• Take on relevant module leader and/or programme leader responsibilities, including associated marketing, recruitment, delivery and ongoing programme development activities.

Research / Scholarship

• Engage in individual research and collaborate both internally and externally on research projects that are consistent with the College, and contribute to influencing leading edge practice in the University and contribution to the REF.
• Sustain and enhance the reputation of the University by publishing in appropriate quality journals and presenting at scholarly activities such as workshops, conferences and other similar events.
• Develop and maintain contacts and relationship with relevant professional, research and industrial organisations.
• Contribute to writing bids for externally funded research projects.

Other

• Act as a personal tutor, supporting and mentoring students as appropriate.
• Provide pastoral care to students, referring when necessary to services that provide further support.
• Support marketing and student recruitment activities as required.
• Develop external links in order, for example, to support student recruitment, secure student placements, facilitate outreach work, generate income or build relationships for future activities.
• Be responsible for administrative duties in areas such as admissions, timetabling, examinations and assessment of progress and student attendance.
