Location: Cheltenham General Hospital - Cheltenham. Hours: 37.5 hours per week, full time, permanent. Salary: £57,528 - £64,750 (pa pro rata if part time). Closing date: 21/07/:59.

Job overview

We are seeking an advanced Biomedical Scientist to lead diagnostic cytology reporting, holding IBMS DEP or ASD in Diagnostic Cytopathology. The role involves screening, reporting, and authorising non gynaecological cytology specimens and, where qualified, reporting both positives and negatives, including FNA specimens.

Main duties
  • Screen, report and authorise non gynaecological cytology specimens from urinary, respiratory and serous fluid systems and FNA samples.
  • For ASD holders report both positive and negative non gynaecological samples.
  • Provide rapid on site assessment of adequacy in relevant FNA clinics.
  • Oversee daily organisation, maintenance and workflow of the section.
  • Teach and develop staff and maintain high standards of practice.
  • Participate in training of biomedical scientists and junior medical staff.
  • Offer expert professional advice on sampling and interpretation of specimens.
  • Liaise with consultant colleagues and clinical staff, attend MDTs as appropriate.
  • Write and update SOPs, establish internal quality standards and corrective measures.
  • Ensure participation in external QA schemes and maintain standards.
Qualifications
  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (or equivalent)
  • MSc Biomedical Science (or equivalent)
  • HCPC registration
  • IBMS DEP or ASD in Diagnostic Cytopathology
Knowledge and skills
  • Detailed knowledge of theoretical and practical procedures for diagnostic cytology
  • Experience with laboratory information systems
Clinical experience
  • Preparation techniques for diagnostic cytology
  • Screening of diagnostic cytology specimens
  • Reporting of diagnostic cytology specimens
  • Teaching and training
