Lead Cancer Nurse

We are seeking an experienced, motivated and compassionate Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse who is able to act on their own initiative, adopting a values led 'can do' leadership style within a climate of constant change to oversee, develop, and continually improve cancer services across the organisation. You will bring expertise in cancer care and a strong track record of leadership and service improvement.

The post holder will provide visible Trust wide professional leadership and support for the specialist cancer nursing workforce and is pivotal in ensuring excellence across the cancer pathway from diagnosis, treatment and living with and beyond cancer diagnosis.

The post holder will be required to lead the personalised care agenda keeping a focus on patient experience and engagement, as well as raising the awareness of inequalities in cancer care.

You will be an inspiring and approachable clinical leader with a deep commitment to improving the experience of people affected by cancer.

Main duties of the job
  • The Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse will play a crucial role as an ambassador for cancer nursing care, both within the Trust and regionally across organisational boundaries, cultivating a diverse range of services to establish an integrated approach to patient care and supporting the delivery of quality outcomes in cancer.
  • As a highly experienced specialist within the field of cancer nursing they will have corporate professional oversight of the specialist cancer nursing workforce across multiple tumour sites and care groups, and work with the operational specialty teams, ensuring there is equity of provision as well as ongoing development of expertise within the clinical teams in line with the ambitions set within NHS legislation and local Cancer Strategy.
  • The Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse will be managerially responsible for the Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Service Manager providing strategic support and guidance to the service as a whole and will have a clear role in leading expert practice and programmes of improvement work and redesign within cancer in line with local and national priorities.

Person Specification
  • Registered nurse with current NMC registration. Post Reg Qualification in an area of Cancer Care
  • Portfolio of certified/ accredited professional development activity undertaken in relevant areas
  • Broad experience of project work and managing projects in a complex multi system environment
  • Experience of shaping services to support the Personalised Care agenda
  • Experience of working with national charities / professional forums to lead and promote the development of patient centred services
  • Effective interpersonal and intrapersonal skills including high degree of self-awareness and self regulation
  • Working knowledge of national cancer targets and their implementation
