Landscape & Conservation Officer

Summary

We're looking for a Landscape & Conservation Officer to help protect and enhance some of our most significant cultural and natural landscapes. You'll play an important role in ensuring landscapes remain resilient, accessible and authentic by supporting the careful management of change and championing conservation objectives. Working across a varied portfolio of rural and urban landscapes, you'll help balance environmental, cultural and public benefits while supporting the long-term stewardship of places that matter to communities now and in the future.

What it's like to work here

You'll be part of a specialist team that supports conservation outcomes across some of the country's most significant cultural and natural landscapes. Working within the Let Estate function and alongside colleagues from operations, estates, nature conservation, planning, legal and curatorial teams, you'll contribute to strategic projects that extend beyond our property boundaries. This is a collaborative and supportive environment where knowledge sharing, professional development and partnership working are highly valued.

As this is a national role, there is flexibility on your contractual place of work. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We'll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40-60% of your working week.

What you'll be doing

You'll provide expert conservation advice on proposals affecting covenanted land and buildings, historic landscapes and natural assets, helping to ensure decisions are informed by conservation principles, covenant purposes and planning considerations. You'll assess applications for change, negotiate appropriate outcomes and support the delivery of strategic conservation objectives.

You'll also contribute to raising awareness of covenant conservation work, supporting strategic planning activity and sharing expertise with colleagues and volunteers through coaching, mentoring and training. Through your work, you'll help strengthen understanding of conservation practice and support informed decision-making that delivers meaningful outcomes for people, nature and heritage.

Who we're looking for

You'll bring a broad range of the following knowledge, skills and experience, shaped by different roles, sectors or career paths, and the judgment to apply them effectively at scale;

• In depth knowledge of historic buildings and cultural landscapes or land management and nature conservation

• Knowledge of planning legislation and conservation principles in relation to heritage or nature conservation

• Ability to articulate public benefits, legal constraints and strategic objectives to a range of audiences

• Track record of working with partners and stakeholders to deliver strategic conservation objectives

• Ability to analyse issues strategically and apply a level of reasoned judgement

• Experience of working in an organisation managing change to heritage and natural assets in protected or special landscapes and delivering strategic conservation objectives
