Job Description

On behalf of DWP, we are looking for a Java Developer for a 12-month (Inside IR35) contract. Hybrid working with 2-3 days per week required in either Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, or Newcastle.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK's biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and various benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. We operate on a scale almost unmatched in Europe, and most people in Britain come into contact with us at some point in their lives.

Working with DWP, you will help drive our priorities to:

  • Help people move into work and support those already in work to progress, increasing overall workforce participation.
  • Assist people in planning and saving for later life, while providing a safety net for those in need now.
  • Provide effective, efficient, and innovative services to millions of claimants, including the most vulnerable in society.
  • Improve the experience of our services while maximizing value for money for the taxpayer.

We seek an outstanding Java Developer who can make a positive impact and contribute to the UK's most demanding digital service for government. Your work will help transform public services and positively impact millions of lives.

You must be ready to work within an Agile, multidisciplinary team of Developers, Designers, and Analysts focused on DWP's flagship welfare reform programme.

Day-to-day, you will be involved in designing, creating, and improving products, platforms, and transactions across government.

  • An active SC Clearance is essential; candidates must be willing and eligible to undergo checks. Preference may be given to those with active security clearance due to the short-term nature and urgency of the role.
  • Recent experience with Java 17 or later.
  • Experience with large microservice architectures.
  • Experience working in an Agile environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of Jackson, JAX-RS, mocking frameworks like Mockito, and messaging platforms such as ActiveMQ or Kafka.
  • Experience with MongoDB or other document databases.
  • Experience handling large data sets and scaling their storage and processing.

Please note this role can only be performed within the UK and not overseas.

Disability Confident

As part of the Disability Confident Scheme, DWP guarantees to interview all candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria. High volumes of qualified candidates may lead to selecting the best from within this group. We encourage candidates with disabilities and neurodivergence to apply, and in some cases, may require holding active security clearance.

Armed Forces Covenant

DWP guarantees to interview veterans or spouses/partners of military personnel who meet all essential criteria. Similar to above, the best candidates from qualified groups will be shortlisted, potentially requiring active security clearance.
