Job Description
Responsibilities 
- Daily pastoral, religious and spiritual care for patients, staff and visitors, including confidential record keeping in the chaplaincy data system.
- Collaborate with the chaplaincy team: attend meetings, contribute to development of the chaplaincy service across the Trust.
- Administer rites and ceremonies appropriate to patients' beliefs and the chaplain's authorised faith community or belief group.
- Provide sacramental and pastoral support for dying patients and their families and respond to the needs of the recently bereaved.
- Conduct hospital contract funerals and services for babies and non viable foetuses in accordance with Trust procedures.
- Deliver and maintain a 24 hour chaplaincy on call service; professionalism requires irregular hours and flexibility.
- Offer staff support following complex or demanding clinical situations.
- Work with key allied professionals to develop learning and practice.
- Prepare and deliver training, development and information for clinical colleagues on spiritual care.
- Maintain knowledge of NHS and professional protocols, guidelines and competencies for chaplaincy services.
- Promote understanding and application of spiritual care across all ages within the OUH NHS Foundation Trust.
- Administer administrative responsibilities: maintain staff rotas, pastoral resources and manage chaplaincy stock.
- Supervise ministerial students on placement and participate in the delivery of an agreed seminar programme.
- Participate in training programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate studies on aspects of spiritual care.
- Provide pastoral and spiritual support for relatives visiting the mortuary to view a deceased adult or child.
- Be available to church and faith community leaders to support them in caring for community members in hospital.
- Advise the Lead Chaplain on resources required to meet the spiritual, pastoral and religious needs of patients.
- Show accountability to the Lead Chaplain and team colleagues who manage the chaplaincy charitable funds for any donations received.
- Rooted in a faith or belief community.
- Degree in theology, pastoral studies or equivalent.
- Knowledge of all aspects of spiritual care and how this is applied in diverse faith and cultural traditions.
- Counselling qualification.
- Experience working in healthcare settings.
