Job Description
Healthcare Science Laboratory/Biosample Technician Apprenticeship

The closing date is 03 August 2026

Engine the Cambridge Clinical Research Facility as a Biosample Apprentice, you will gain hands on experience in sample handling, processing and data management within a multidisciplinary team. The role supports cutting edge clinical research and allows you to shadow and assist staff in the Pathology Department with genetic technologies.

Main duties of the job
  • Assist with day to day laboratory housekeeping and processes.
  • Carry out routine laboratory maintenance.
  • Collect and prepare samples, buffers and reagents.
  • Support basic admin tasks such as scanning sample requests and maintaining laboratory records and filing systems.
  • Provide technical support to scientific staff.
Qualifications
  • GCSE English at Grade 4/C or above.
  • GCSE Maths at Grade 4/C or above.
  • GCSE Science at Grade 4/C or above.
  • Good standard of general education.
  • Equivalent literacy and numeracy skills acceptable.
Experience
  • Prioritising own work.
  • Organising work (e.g., in school, college, work).
  • Work experience (voluntary, part time, weekend, school activities).
  • Experience in a laboratory environment.
Knowledge
  • Desire to learn and develop from training.
  • Understanding of confidentiality.
  • Ability to work flexibly and adapt to job demands.
  • Interest in working in a patient and customer care focused environment.
  • Basic IT software knowledge.
Skills
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Attention to detail and accurate work.
  • Motivation, punctuality and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Typing skills.

Contract

Full time, 27 month period. Apprenticeship salary starts at £16,258 per year, increasing to the National Minimum Wage after 12 months in post.
