We are working with a well-established, continually growing accountancy and financial services practice in Manchester. The firm operates across audit, corporate finance, business services, business recovery, payroll, company secretarial, and tax, with a tech-focused approach to client service. The tax team is an integral part of the business, currently managing a large and diverse client base including owner-managed businesses, SMEs, high-net-worth individuals, partnerships, trusts, and multi-million pound corporate groups across sectors such as property, healthcare, financial services, and professional services, to name but a few. The firm is transitioning from a compliance-focused tax function to a strategic, advisory-led tax division, with technology enabling efficiency in compliance work to free up time for high-value advisory services. This is a unique opportunity for a senior tax professional to build, lead, and shape the tax division, creating distinct Corporate Tax and Personal Tax teams while implementing innovative systems and processes.
ROLE OVERVIEW - HEAD OF TAXThe Head of Tax will lead the tax function, driving both compliance and advisory services, and will be instrumental in transforming the division into a high-performing, profitable, and advisory-focused operation. This role offers autonomy, strategic influence, and the opportunity to develop future leaders within the tax team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead the tax division, establishing clear structures and processes across Corporate Tax and Personal Tax
- Recruit, mentor, and develop senior leaders for Corporate Tax and Personal Tax, providing career progression and support for high-potential team members
- Oversee the implementation of tech-enabled compliance software for both divisions, ensuring efficient and streamlined processes
- Drive the shift from a compliance-led to advisory-led service model, focusing on high-value client work and growth opportunities
- Manage existing corporate and personal tax portfolios, delivering advisory and compliance services at the highest standard
- Identify and develop business opportunities within the existing client base and new market
- Monitor divisional performance, ensuring profitability and long-term strategic growth
- Act as a visible leader within the wider business, embedding a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and client-focused service
- CTA qualified - Essential
- ACA /ACCA - Desirable
- Extensive corporate tax experience, ideally 10+ years, with significant leadership experience
- Proven ability to manage complex corporate and personal tax portfolios, including advisory work
- Experience in developing and mentoring tax teams and future leaders
- Strong strategic, commercial, and business development acumen
- Confident, decisive, and capable of operating autonomously at a senior level
