Job Description
Job Title and Overview

An outstanding individual is sought to fulfil the role of Head of School for Paediatrics. The post will be offered on a secondment arrangement to NHS England - 4 PA / 16 hours per week. All work undertaken is incorporated into the Consultant Job Plan.

As Head of School, you will be responsible for the overall quality, management and supervision of the programmes within your school. You will ensure all programmes meet the standards defined by NHSE, the GMC and the Royal College, and work closely with senior educators, other Heads of Schools, Directors of Medical Education and Training Programme Directors to enable each trainee to access a comprehensive range of experiences covering the speciality curricula.

Key Responsibilities Leadership
  • Provide effective clinical leadership.
  • Act on behalf of Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery, providing expert advice on specialty specific matters.
Quality and Safety
  • Implement the NHSE Quality Framework and Education and Training Quality Improvement and Performance policies.
  • Address specialty specific matters and trainee/trainer concerns.
  • Oversee recruitment to training posts and programmes.
  • Manage postgraduate programmes, including assessments, progression, rotations, support and remediation, OOP management, trainee management, career support, less than full time training, inter deanery transfer, academic training and other related work streams.
  • Attend school meetings and other relevant meetings.
  • Meet Code of Practice requirements.
Educational and Workforce Development
  • Advise and support educational and workforce development elements.
  • Engage in strategic workforce development and commissioning.
  • Develop educational programmes where needed to support achievement of curriculum competencies.
Finance
  • Ensure compliance with procurement requirements.
Requirements

You will be expected to maintain a clinical commitment. It is essential that you have a medical degree, membership/fellowship of the relevant Royal College/Faculty and a current substantive contract as an NHS Consultant in a relevant specialty.

In addition, you should possess excellent leadership skills and meet professional requirements for Continuing Professional Development and Revalidation, making a broader professional contribution through academic and managerial responsibilities.

This is a North East & Yorkshire role, so your work will span the whole region.

The post is offered on a secondment basis. Successful candidates are responsible for securing a written agreement from their employer for release from clinical work for the specified number of PAs.

Qualifications
  • Primary medical qualification or registration on the Specialist Register.
  • Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty, Professional Association and/or Regulatory Body.
Experience & Knowledge
  • Experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context.
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education.
Skills
  • Leadership.
  • Problem solving.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, written and presentation skills.
