We are seeking an experienced and forward thinking leader to head our Information Services function within the Performance and Information directorate within our Digital Transformation and Information function. Reporting to the Director of Performance and Information, this senior role is pivotal in shaping how high quality data, insight and intelligence support decision making across the Trust.
As Head of Information Services, you will lead teams responsible for Data Quality, Clinical Coding, Contracting & CDS, and a highly skilled cohort of analysts. You will oversee the delivery of accurate statutory reporting, drive improvements in data quality, and champion the development of innovative BI solutions that strengthen clinical governance, operational performance, and strategic planning. The staff in this team largely work remotely and this is a therefore hybrid based role.
This is a role for someone with deep specialist knowledge of NHS information management, exceptional communication skills, an attention to detail and a proven ability to lead teams. As part of the management team you will play a key part in modernising our digital infrastructure, expanding our BI capabilities, and ensuring the Trust continues to meet national standards while delivering excellent outcomes for patients and staff. Main duties of the job- Communicate highly complex statistical data to a variety of audiences, both technical and non technical.
- Formulate long term strategic plans.
- In depth specialist knowledge of information management and performance in the NHS.
- Interpret, draw conclusions from and implications of results from statistical, performance and public health analyses for a wide range of internal and external staff.
- Strong understanding of clinical coding classifications, coding standards and grouping rules within NHS contracting & commissioning.

Job responsibilities- Responsible for Data Quality, Clinical Coding and Contracting & CDS teams.
- Deputise for the Director Performance and Information where required.
- Accountable for the delivery of high quality information and performance monitoring service on behalf of the Trust, working closely with clinicians and all levels of management within the Trust, the local host Clinical Commissioning Group and other commissioners.
- Establish working relationships with other external NHS organisations (e.g. NHS England, DoH, other NHS Providers).
- Corporate responsibility for monitoring performance against national and local targets and develop processes and procedures for such monitoring across the Trust.
- Manage a team of highly skilled analysts, Clinical Coders and data quality officers, responsible for day to day management, including performance monitoring and appraisals.
- Develop policies and procedures in relation to Information and Data Quality.
- Develop and monitor budgets for Information Services.
- Work with the NUH organisation to convert strategic objectives into intelligence and analysis.
- Jointly responsible with the Head of Business Intelligence for the reporting of all NHS and DHSE statutory returns, ensuring accuracy and quality of the information reported and that returns are submitted on time.
- Responsible for collection and reporting of information that supports management needs, clinical governance improvement, acute trust performance management and local decision making within the health economy.
- Promote improvements in data quality and data collection and recording.
- Horizon scan for the latest developments in data and information management, looking for new technologies such as SNOMED CT, system changes, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
- Ensure the Information teams are equipped to do their job, including hardware, software and skills.
- Design and implement a quality and performance surveillance unit to ensure the Trust fully understands its position at a ward level and against national standards and peers; take action and make recommendations where necessary.
- Prioritise the roll out of the Nerve Centre and Insource platforms, ensuring timescales meet current project deadlines, such as upgrades and new modules of the new EPR.
- Liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders, Board members, clinicians, Information, Clinical Coding, Data Quality, Directorate Management teams, Finance and HR.
- Liaise with senior system users and system managers to map business processes so that data items are directly available or derived where possible to support the needs of the service.
- Plan developments and workload over timescales of projects that may last years, integrating many complex requirements of internal and external end users.
- Evaluate new products and technologies and consider their usage as solutions within the information development work programme, e.g. delivery of intelligence on handheld or tablet devices.
- Continually strive to improve the effectiveness, performance, ease of access and understanding of existing interfaced NUH systems.
- Form important links between technical staff and end users, communicating effectively between both groups and converting business requirements into system specifications and design via business analysis.
- Support the data warehousing by ensuring that the schema in the warehouse reflects the reporting needs of the service.
- Contribute to the design and development of all future system modules to be included in the Business Intelligence solution and manipulation of relevant data sources.
- Support the development of performance measures, including contract targets and indicators (e.g. QIPP, CQUINs, Clinical Quality Indicators).
- Continually look to enhance the format of information presented and provide innovative representations for a range of information.
- Understand the principles of the Data Protection Act and Caldicott principles to ensure the practices of the information services department protect the security of patient information at all time.
- Ensure national changes to information reporting are reflected on EPR and that the quality of data is not at risk; ensure hospital staff that collect data are aware of changes and that the necessary policies and procedures are updated.
- Deputise for the Deputy Director of Information & Performance as appropriate and provide short term cover for colleagues during periods of leave.
