I'm working with a long-established company in the middle of a major technology transformation.

They have a suite of in-house applications supporting every stage of the customer journey - from onboarding through to billing, operations and service.

This is a next-gen programme already underway, moving toward AWS-hosted, event-driven microservices - and they now need a strong Head of Engineering to bring structure, standards and momentum across the whole function.

The role

You'll be leading an engineering organisation of around 20+ engineers.

Your focus will be to:

• Take ownership of engineering quality, delivery and best practice across teams
• Bring consistency to how squads operate (process, tooling, standards, CI/CD)
• Drive the architectural shift from monolith to service-based microservices on AWS

This is a hands-on leadership role - not coding every day, but close to the tech, the people and the outcomes. PHP experience is useful but not essential. Strong engineering leadership and modern platform experience is what matters.

I'm keen to speak with candidates who:

• Have led teams through platform modernisation or cloud transformation
• Are strong on engineering standards, CI/CD and delivery quality
• Can bring clarity, structure and momentum fast
• If you have come from a PHP background, this will be advantageous
• AWS experience (especially around modern services and messaging/event-driven systems) will be a big plus
• Must be based in commutable distance to North Manchester offices
• 2 days onsite/3 days remote - first 6 months onsite to build foundations
