Job Title: Commercial Grounds Maintenance Operative

Job Purpose

The Commercial Grounds Maintenance Operative is responsiblefor delivering high-quality grounds maintenance and environmental servicesacross Monmouthshire. The role involves maintaining parks, open spaces,highways verges, schools, housing sites, cemeteries, sports facilities, andcommercial client locations to ensure they remain safe, clean, attractive, andsustainable.

Working independently and as part of a team, the successfulcandidate will use a range of grounds maintenance equipment while supportingthe Council's environmental objectives and commitment to excellent servicedelivery.

Key Responsibilities

Grounds Maintenance

• Carryout grass cutting using pedestrian and ride-on mowing equipment.
  
• Operatestrimmers, hedge cutters, mowers, and other grounds maintenance machinery.
  
• Maintainpublic open spaces, schools, housing areas, parks, and commercial sites.
  
• Undertakeshrub bed maintenance, pruning, planting, weeding, and landscapingactivities.
  
• Assistwith sports pitch marking and maintenance.
  
• Supportenvironmental enhancement and sustainability projects.
  
• Emptylitter bins and carry out litter picking duties.
  
• Respondto fly-tipping incidents and follow evidence collection procedures.
  
• Assistwith street cleansing duties as required.
  
• Helpmaintain high standards of environmental cleanliness across the county.
  

Cemetery & Arboricultural Duties

• Assistwith grave digging and cemetery maintenance following appropriatetraining.
  
• Supporttree maintenance and arboricultural activities.
  
• Undertakeseasonal grounds and environmental maintenance tasks.
  

Vehicle & Equipment Responsibilities

• Conductdaily safety checks on vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
  
• Keepvehicles, tools, and machinery clean and operational.
  
• Reportdefects and maintenance issues promptly.
  
• Ensureall equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines andhealth and safety requirements.
  

Emergency Response

• Participatein emergency response activities including:
  
• Floodresponse and sandbag deployment
  
• Snowclearance operations
  
• Stormdamage response
  
• Fallentree clearance
  
• Participatein standby rotas, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays whenrequired.
  
• Previousexperience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, or a similaroutdoor role.
  
• Experienceoperating:
  
• Strimmers
  
• Hedgecutters
  
• Ride-onmowers
  
• Experienceworking outdoors in all weather conditions.
  
• Abilityto undertake physically demanding work.
  
• Experienceworking effectively within a team environment.
  
• Localauthority or commercial grounds maintenance experience.
  
• Sportspitch maintenance experience.
  
• Cemeterymaintenance knowledge.
  
• Arboriculturalor tree maintenance experience.
  
• Streetcleansing or environmental services experience.
  

Essential Qualifications & Requirements

• FullUK Driving Licence.
  
• Goodunderstanding of Health & Safety legislation and safe workingpractices.
  
• Abilityto work flexibly and adapt to operational requirements.
  
• Strongcommunication and teamwork skills.
  
• Willingnessto undertake training as required.
  

Desirable Qualifications

• NVQLevel 2 in Horticulture, Landscaping, or equivalent.
  
• Chainsawor Arboricultural Qualifications.
  
• FirstAid Qualification.
  
• HGVLicence.
  

Additional Information

• Hours: 37 hours per week with participation in the Annualised Hours Scheme.
  
• Flexibleworking pattern to meet seasonal service demands.
  
• Occasionalevening, weekend, and bank holiday working may be required.
  
• Participationin emergency call-out and standby rotas is expected.
