Governor

Overview

National Star is seeking a part-time, volunteer Governor to join the Board of Governors. The role focuses on oversight and governance to help ensure young people with complex disabilities access a personalised, broad and balanced curriculum and achieve their life goals.

Responsibilities

• Use significant management experience in a specialist school or further education provision for young people with complex physical, medical, and learning disabilities to help the Governors oversee and monitor college activities.
• Contribute personal and professional expertise and strategic perspective to support the charity's vision and mission.
• Ensure the charity's services comply with legal, regulatory, and statutory requirements, including Ofsted, Care Quality Commission, and Estyn.
• Collaborate with other Governors, Trustees and senior staff to promote learner voice, inclusive practice, and innovative approaches to education, student success, and community engagement.
• Attend meetings and lead or participate in assigned responsibilities, including contact with key staff between meetings.

Qualifications and experience

• Special Educational Needs sector experience, preferably in Further Education.
• Strong interest in promoting the learner voice.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, demonstrating empathy, tact, and diplomacy.

Your commitment as a Governor

Governors typically devote around 12 hours per month. There are three formal termly meetings and two informal development sessions each year. Meetings may be during the day or early evenings, with the next academic year planned in advance. Each Governor has lead responsibilities requiring contact or meetings with key staff between meetings. Governors and Trustees are encouraged to attend annual leavers' ceremonies in Ullenwood, Wales, Hereford and Worcester, as well as colleague recognition and long-service awards.

Benefits and status

• Volunteers in the Governing body are not eligible for full staff benefits; out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed.
• New Governors are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check.
