The Role

SALARY: Starting from £65,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience

REPORTS TO: Consents Director

LOCATION: Cardiff, Wales (Hybrid working)

With a portfolio of development projects in a pre consent application phase, the main responsibilities of the Environment Manager are to lead and support the Development Team in providing environmental advice and input throughout each project's delivery. Work focuses on environmental surveys, mitigation, biodiversity net gain, habitat management and wider cultural/nature enhancement measures that align with Welsh Government objectives, legislation and planning policy, and meet commercial expectations, buildability, and programme delivery.

Main Responsibilities
  • Manage the environmental aspects of the Green Gen Cymru portfolio, informing project design and ensuring compliance with planning policy requirements and successful applications.
  • Oversee and support relevant consultants to identify and address environmental constraints and opportunities within the portfolio.
  • Provide guidance to project managers on environmental issues, protocols and key risk assessments.
  • Progress mitigation and enhancement opportunities with third party advisors and external groups, presenting proposals internally to deliver on time and within budget.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs and local communities, to maximise portfolio benefits.
  • Assess key environmental indicators that determine project viability and lead efforts to increase consentability.
  • Support the External Affairs Team on nature and biodiversity gains within their remit.
Key Accountabilities
  • Collaborate with and advise the wider Development Team on potential constraints that hinder maximising development rights and consentability, and provide solutions against identified risks.
  • Lead the identification and design of environmental initiatives for each project's planning application.
  • Provide technical review of EIAs, technical appendices and scoping reports to ensure compliance with local and national policy and alignment with Green Gen Cymru's goals.
  • Support project managers in overseeing external environmental consultants, including statutory stakeholder consultation, scoping, EIA and planning application submissions.

  • In depth understanding of environmental/regulatory opportunities and challenges across all stages of wind project development and the renewable industry.
  • Detailed knowledge of consenting drivers for successful wind farm development and key project risks.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the planning system and environmental policy related to renewable energy development.
  • Deep knowledge of ecological, cultural and environmental initiatives for best in class wind farm and site design.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organisational and coordination skills.
  • An entrepreneurial approach and strong problem solving abilities.
  • Resilience and adaptability to changing situations.
  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills.
Experience & Qualifications
  • 5-7 years of in house experience in a development company or consultancy.
  • Degree in an environmental science based subject or equivalent.
  • Track record of leading and implementing environmental initiatives and design within resource and budget constraints.
  • Experience dealing with planning authorities and third party stakeholders, including landowners, external consultants, interest groups and voluntary organisations.
  • Involvement in producing and delivering large scale infrastructure planning applications, Environmental Statements and long term environmental/habitat/net gain plans.
