As our team continues to grow, this Geotechnical Engineer position offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a diverse portfolio of projects while working within a highly skilled and collaborative design team.
As part of our multi-disciplinary environment, you will be central to delivering high-quality ground engineering solutions for sectors including Rail, Highways, Power, Defence, Aviation, Life Sciences, Water, and the Public Sector. You'll also support junior engineers and have the opportunity to lead design activities, making a strong impact on both project success and team development.
Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive geotechnical design and specification packages from concept to completion.
- Undertake ground modelling and derive characteristic geotechnical parameters.
- Supervise ground investigations and provide site-based support as required.
- Prepare desk studies, ground investigation specifications, and technical reports.
- Apply a deep understanding of issues such as soft ground, slope failure, historical mine workings, and marginal materials.
- Design solutions for shallow and piled foundations, retaining structures, soil nails, earthworks, and rock anchors.
- Work collaboratively across disciplines to integrate ground engineering into the wider design process.
- Represent BakerHicks in client meetings and project discussions.
- Stay informed on current codes, Eurocodes (including EC7), British Standards, CDM Regulations, and H&S practices.
About You
Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology (or equivalent).
- Working towards chartered status with a recognised professional body (ICE, GeolSoc, IMMM).
- MSc or PhD in a relevant field (advantageous).
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Experience & Skills
- Experience in geotechnical engineering within a consultancy environment.
- Solid grounding in soil mechanics and geotechnical/geological principles.
- Strong knowledge of ground issues including soft compressible ground and slope stability.
- Proven geotechnical design experience (foundations, retaining walls, earthworks, soil nails, etc.).
- Experience with ground investigation and construction supervision.
- Proficiency in geotechnical design software (GEO5 desirable).
- Ability to prepare technical documents and deliverables with precision.
- Collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills.
- Full PTS certification is desirable but not essential.
- Willingness to travel for short-term site work in the UK.
