Purpose of the role

The role of the Genetic Counsellor (Basic Grade) is to join our growing team in the cancer genetic service in St. James Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. We provide a virtual, in-person and telehealth genetic counselling as part of a national model of cancer genetic service provision for the Republic of Ireland. This role is suitable for those close to completion of their genetic counselling master training, newly qualified or those in the early stages of clinical practice.

The purpose of this post is to contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, specialist, high quality genetic counselling service for families at risk of inherited diseases in the Genetic Service at St. James Hospital. In conjunction with the Lead Medical Consultant the post holder will:

  • Comprehend the medical facts, including the diagnosis, probable course of the inherited cancer predisposition and the available management.
  • Appreciate the way heredity contributes to an inherited risk, and the risk of recurrence in specified relatives.
  • Understand the options (including genetic testing) for dealing with the genetic risk;
  • Choose the course of action most appropriate for them.
