UPMC is expanding a dedicated Men's Health service centred on preventive screening and proactive care. We are seeking a Consultant or GP to lead and deliver a male focused health screening service that encourages earlier engagement, timely detection and effective management of conditions most relevant to men such as cardiovascular risk, metabolic health, prostate and urological concerns, sexual and hormonal health, musculoskeletal health, mental well being, sleep and lifestyle factors. The successful candidate will deliver structured men's health screening pathways (baseline and age/risk stratified tiers), provide comprehensive clinical care, coordinate timely referrals within the UPMC network and champion patient engagement and outreach in the local community.
Key Objectives- Make preventive screening a key tool to support men's health, improving uptake and early detection.
- Deliver a male friendly service experience (clear pathways, privacy, practical advice, convenient follow ups).
- Embed data, audit and outcomes tracking to drive quality and continuous improvement.
- Strengthen referral pathways to Urology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Sports & Exercise Medicine, Mental Health, Sleep, and Lifestyle Medicine.
- Conduct tiered men's health checks (baseline and risk stratified), including vital signs (BP, BMI, waist), cardiovascular risk profiling (lipids, HbA1c/fasting glucose, ASCVD/QRISK), lifestyle, family history.
- Prostate health (PSA per guidelines, DRE where indicated, symptom scores e.g. IPSS, counselling on shared decision making).
- Hormonal & sexual health (testosterone with appropriate timing & interpretation, ED assessment, fertility considerations, STI screening where relevant).
- Mental health (screening tools for low mood, anxiety, stress, alcohol use), sleep risk (e.g. STOP Bang), and musculoskeletal/activity assessment.
- Provide evidence based management plans, safety netting, and structured follow up.
- Order and interpret investigations (bloods, urinalysis, ECG, spirometry where applicable) and coordinate further tests (e.g. ambulatory BP, cardiac imaging via referral).
- Optimise management of common men's health conditions (hypertension, dyslipidaemia, pre diabetes/diabetes, LUTS/BPH, erectile dysfunction, low testosterone where clinically indicated, obesity/metabolic syndrome, sleep concerns).
- Operate clear referral pathways to Urology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Mental Health, Sleep Medicine, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Exercise Physiology, and Sports & Exercise Medicine within UPMC and partner services.
- Coordinate rapid access where red flag features are present; ensure closed loop referrals and timely communication back to patients.
- Work closely with UPMC consultants, allied health professionals and primary care colleagues to deliver joined up, high quality care.
- Participate in MDT discussions for complex cases and contribute to pathway refinement.
- Shape a male focused clinic environment (discreet pathways, clear pre visit instructions, practical health coaching, targeted information).
- Lead community outreach (workplace screening days, sports club partnerships, men's health awareness campaigns) to increase screening uptake and reduce barriers to access.
- Maintain accurate records, utilise clinical IT systems for data capture and outcomes reporting, and contribute to service audits, research and quality improvement.
- Ensure adherence to Irish clinical guidance and UPMC standards for screening, prescribing, consent, and information governance.
Registration: Irish Medical Council (IMC) - Specialist Division (General Practice) or Specialist Register.
Experience: 3 years post CSCST with strong exposure to preventive care and men's health.
Health Screening Expertise: Delivery of comprehensive checks (BP, lipids, HbA1c, PSA per guidelines, testosterone where indicated), risk assessment and lifestyle counselling.
Clinical Skills: Assessment and management of cardiovascular risk, metabolic syndrome/diabetes, urological presentations (LUTS/BPH, ED), sleep and musculoskeletal activity guidance.
Digital Skills: Competent with clinical IT systems for data collection, audit, research and operational reporting.
Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills, shared decision making and health coaching approach tailored to men's health.
