The General Manager (GM) - Intermodal Operations will play a pivotal role in the successful relaunch of terminal operations at Barking and the introduction of a new intermodal rail service. With the terminal currently inactive, this role involves building a capable on-site team and leading the full operational restart. The GM will be responsible for overseeing both the terminal and transport service operations from launch through to steady-state operations.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring a strong commitment to delivering key project milestones, fostering a high-performance culture, and ensuring operational excellence. The GM will manage internal teams and external contractors, ensuring safe, efficient, and customer-focused service delivery. Once operational, the role will evolve to focus on continuous improvement, scaling the service (including additional train paths), and achieving the financial and strategic objectives outlined in the Business Plan.

Project leadership :
Lead the strategic planning and execution of an intermodal service launch
Define and improve operating procedures to manage the terminal and transport service (client bookings, transport planning, delivery and pick-up, gate access, subcontractors, disruptions, etc.)
Supervise infrastructure reinstatement works and enhancement
Support the group to develop rail freight business (including new clients and rail operators)
Terminal Management :
Manage the terminal on a day-to-day basis and supervise subcontractors' operations
Plan capacity, schedule, and resources along with subcontractors
Identify opportunities for operational and infrastructure improvements, and lead the development of specifications for upgrades or expansions.
Review and monitor subcontractor performance
Uphold safety and environmental standards across all terminal and transport activities
Manage an intermodal rail transport service :
Manage and support a team composed of operations/dispatch agents
Ensure the rail service meets high standards of quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
Manage communication with customers and other stakeholders and foster a positive customer experience
Plan capacity and adapt operational set-up when required
Identify clients and opportunities to increase load factor
Decision-making Authority
The General Manager - Intermodal Operations holds full accountability for:
The strategic and operational management of both the terminal and intermodal transport services, including their respective P&Ls.
All decisions related to the recruitment, development, and performance management of direct reports.
Selection and promotion of staff within the intermodal business unit.
Budget planning and oversight, with delegated authority for operational spending (limits to be defined).
Qualifications and Experience
Degree or equivalent experience in Management, Transport, or Logistics (preferred but not essential).
Extensive demonstrable experience in real-time operations management.
Proven expertise in rail freight operations and intermodal logistics.
Strong leadership and team-building capabilities.
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Customer-focused with a commitment to service excellence.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Inclusive mindset and ability to work across cultures and languages.
Proficiency in English required; French language skills are a strong advantage.
