FT Consultant O&G with interest in Urognaecology and Hysteroscopy

The aim is to appoint a fixed term consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist with a special interest in urognaecology and also in hysteroscopy to join the established team at University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex). We are looking for a capable and enthusiastic colleague who will contribute to the resident on call cover for obstetrics and gynaecology and also help in development of the urogynaecology and hysteroscopy services over the next decade and beyond.

The Trust merged with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Sussex to form University Hospitals Sussex in 2021. Our current birth rate is approximately 2000 per annum at St Richards Hospital. The trust also has a high level of gynaecological activity. Gynaecology services include two-week rule diagnostics, urogynaecology, ambulatory gynaecology including colposcopy and outpatient hysteroscopy, specialist early pregnancy services and paediatric gynaecology.

The post is primarily intended to be situated at the St Richard's site but commitments at Worthing Hospital and Southlands Hospitals Sites may be necessary.

The Trust is committed to maintaining good quality teaching and training of junior medical staff/medical students and the successful candidate will be expected to actively support this and encourage audit and research. The department actively participates in research and supports undergraduate students from three medical schools with an active interest in undergraduate education.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

Work well as a member of a multidisciplinary team

Be able to set up new multidisciplinary services to encompass the particular needs of different groups of patients

Be clinically competent and confident in all aspects of acute care

Be aware of their own clinical limitations and able to seek help where necessary

Be able to teach the skills necessary for safe practice to trainees in years one to seven

Be able to undertake and use clinical audit in this field

Be able to produce evidence based clinical guidelines and actively participate in quality improvement projects within the division

On Call Commitment:

Weekdays alternate night consultant resident on call (20:30 to 09:00)

Weekend Resident on call 1:8 Saturday and Sunday (08:30 to 21:00)

Person Specification Experience/Qualifications
  • MRCOG or its recognised equivalent.
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 12 months for fixed term post
  • Higher Degree
  • ATSM urgynaecology and vaginal surgery
Clinical Skills and Experience
  • Sound skills and experience in managing emergency obstetric and gynaecological presentations
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • An ability to communicate well with patients and staff
  • Experience in acute gynaecology
  • Urogynaecologyand urodynamics
Knowledge
  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
