Role Summary

The Engineering Lead (Director) is a senior technical leadership role within EY Technology Consulting, responsible for driving high quality engineering delivery across complex client programmes. This role is weighted strongly toward engineering depth, with a focus on hands on leadership, technical oversight, and continuous improvement of engineering practices.

The successful candidate will operate at the forefront of technology, including the adoption and application of emerging capabilities such as AI agent enabled engineering, ensuring delivery aligns with leading industry practices and evolving innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership and Delivery

  • Lead and oversee engineering delivery across multiple teams, ensuring quality, scalability, and resilience of solutions.
  • Drive engineering execution across the full delivery lifecycle: build, test, deploy, and run.
  • Ensure strong engineering discipline in code quality, testing, release management, and operational readiness.
  • Actively review and challenge implementation approaches, ensuring pragmatic and high quality outcomes.

Technical Depth and Innovation

  • Maintain deep hands on understanding of modern engineering practices and technologies.
  • Operate at the leading edge of technology trends, including AI driven development approaches and automation.
  • Champion the adoption of AI agent enabled engineering, DevSecOps automation, and modern software delivery practices.
  • Introduce and embed innovative approaches that improve efficiency, quality, and speed of delivery.

Platform and Cloud Engineering

  • Lead engineering teams delivering cloud native and hybrid platforms, across public cloud (AWS, Azure) and enterprise environments.
  • Oversee development of microservices based, containerised solutions and modern distributed systems.
  • Ensure robust implementation of integration, API first design, and secure service interaction.

DevSecOps and Engineering Excellence

  • Drive strong DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and deployment pipelines.
  • Set expectations for engineering standards across environments, releases, and production support.
  • Embed observability, monitoring, and reliability practices into all engineering deliverables.

Team Leadership and Capability Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering leads, architects, and senior engineers.
  • Build high performing, accountable engineering teams with strong delivery culture.
  • Actively support recruitment, interview processes, and capability growth in the engineering function.

Client Engagement and Advisory

  • Act as a senior technical advisor to client stakeholders, providing clear and practical guidance.
  • Communicate complex technical topics in a straightforward and business relevant manner.
  • Support programme leadership in managing risks, trade offs, and delivery decisions.

Support to Growth and Pursuits (Secondary)

  • Contribute to proposals and client opportunities through technical solutioning and delivery input.
  • Provide engineering credibility in client discussions, without primary responsibility for sales.
Technical Capabilities Cloud and Platform Engineering
  • AWS and/or Azure cloud platforms
  • Hybrid cloud and enterprise platform environments
  • Containerisation and orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes/OpenShift)
Backend and Distributed Systems
  • Java / Spring Boot or equivalent enterprise backend technologies
  • Microservices architecture and distributed system design
Frontend Engineering
  • Modern web technologies including React and contemporary frameworks.
  • Experience working with enterprise platforms such as Salesforce and integrated ecosystems.
DevSecOps
  • CI/CD tooling (e.g. GitLab, Jenkins or equivalent)
  • Automated testing, release pipelines, and environment management
Integration and APIs
  • API design, integration patterns, and service to service communication
  • Event driven and service mesh concepts
Security and Identity
  • Enterprise authentication and security patterns (OAuth, SAML, SSO)
  • Secure service communication (e.g. mTLS, certificate management)
Emerging Capabilities
  • AI and machine learning-enabled development practices
  • AI agent enabled engineering and automation
  • Intelligent development tooling and productivity acceleration
Skills and Attributes for Success
  • Deep technical engineering expertise with ability to engage at code, design, and delivery levels.

Experience Required
  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, or technology delivery.
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams or large scale delivery programmes.
  • Demonstrated experience in Cloud engineering (AWS and/or Azure), Microservices and modern application development, DevSecOps and automated delivery environments, Complex enterprise, or financial services programmes.
