In 2022 the company opened a state of the art 160,000 square foot manufacturing and logistics facility in Blackburn, Lancashire. Providing a significant advantage in product costs and customer response time and most importantly, allowing Science In Sport to lead the way for quality standards.

Science In Sport is the nutrition partner to globally recognised elite teams, including Tottenham Hotspur, Saracens Rugby, British Triathlon, Aquatics GB, British Cycling, England Netball and Loughborough Sports. The Role

The Food Regulatory and Compliance Manager will be responsible for staying abreast of changes and developments in food regulations and standards globally, supporting the wider business in ensuring the products and services provided remain up to date with relevant regulatory requirements to maintain compliance and legality, with a main focus on brand protection.

Alongside managing a small team of Food Regulatory and Compliance Officers, you will work closely with Manufacturing, NPD, Supply Chain, Quality and Technical collaborating on achieving the shared goal of Science in Sport being the number one performance nutrition brand in the industry.

The work - Your 4 most important responsibilities
  1. Responsible for the compliance of the entire product portfolio, leading on regulatory strategy for the business

  2. Manage the Compliance team to ensure they, and the business, remain abreast of all relevant regulatory requirements and actively and effectively communicate any risks and potential solutions to the relevant stakeholders to reduce risk likelihood/severity wherever possible.

  3. Provide expert advice and support for any relevant regulatory or compliance matters, whether from internal or external stakeholders.

  4. Conduct thorough and appropriate research to understand legal requirements of new territories to open up the opportunity for business development and growth.

Accountability - what you are responsible for delivering
  • Responsible for managing regulatory risk and identifying changes impacting compliance. Lead on development and implementation of regular Horizon Scanning Management process and ensure key requirements are communicated to the business to minimise risk and impact of changes.

  • Provide analysis and support to the business regarding market access, to ensure the requirements of new and existing territories are well understood, allowing the business to open into new markets and continue to legally sell in existing markets, whilst outlining potential risks and options for mitigation where necessary.

  • Provide final approval of all new product documentation i.e. product specifications and packaging artworks.

  • Organise and manage the application and timely delivery of relevant customs and export documentation (EUR1, COO, Certificate of Free Sale, Export Health Certificates etc) to allow Sales teams to trade products legally across the world.

  • Deliver expert knowledge in review of new and existing product development, to assist the business to produce compliant, legal and safe products to protect both customers and the company.

  • Main point of contact for business support with nutritional, regulatory and compliance queries from both internal and external partners, customers, and authorities.

  • Create, improve and maintain business compliance policies and procedures i.e. food labelling guidance, marketing claims guidance etc, to ensure consistent and legal approach across the company.

  • Management of the Food Regulatory and Compliance Officers, encouraging personal and professional development to enhance the individuals, the team and the business.

Capability - the skills and behaviours required to do this job well
  • Hold a degree (or equivalent) in Nutrition, Food Technology, Food Law, Food Science, Regulatory Affairs, or other related subject.

  • Experience working in a food manufacturing or retail environment with deep knowledge and understanding of UK and EU food regulations and standards. Desirable experience with regards to sports nutrition, food supplements and fortified foods specifically.

  • Good working knowledge of regulations pertaining to wider global territories i.e. USA, Canada, Australia, China and Middle East, and the ability and confidence to proactively undertake research into requirements of new and emerging markets

  • Excellent communication skills and competence working cross-functionally to allow seamless collaboration with NPD, Sales, Brand, Marketing, SQA, QA etc

  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to interpret and relay complex legislative information to the wider business.

  • Experience with logistics compliance and export/import processes and required document

  • Ability to manage workload and adapt to changing business priorities and requirements.

  • Relevant experience in managing a small team

  • Overall risk to business due to non compliances in relevant territories will be minimised

  • Understanding of compliance and market access requirements for priority territories will be better understood by the wider business, and competently supported to provide all appropriate documentation to allow for seamless exports.

  • NPD and EPD completed within designated timelines, to meet commercial deadlines
