Job Description
Fleet Technician (Current opening in the Fleet Section of the Human Resources and Corporate Services Department)

High school diploma or General Education Diploma is required.

Four years of experience in the repair of automotive, diesel, or hydraulic equipment as a fleet technician; or successful completion of the NES Fleet Technician Apprenticeship program, or similar program, approved by the DOL Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training is required.

  • Employees must not have a positive drug or alcohol test result within the past 12 months prior to a job posting.
  • Employees must not have any disciplinary actions that include suspension without pay within the past 12 months prior to the job posting. The disciplinary action date is defined as the first day of suspension.
  • Employees must have at least a "2.5" overall job performance on their last performance appraisal.
  • Employees must have taken and passed the most recent Safety Manual Test to certify for any job that would be a promotion.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Learn new emerging and updated vehicle and equipment technologies, applications, and communications. Utilize manufacturers' various diagnostic tools and electronic reference documentation (including schematics) to diagnose, repair and maintain computers, modules, sensors, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, electrical, and mechanical components related to passenger vehicles, light, medium and heavy duty trucks, tractor trailers, backhoes, compressors, aerial devices, cranes, digger derricks, generators, construction equipment, emissions control, driving assist systems, and other vehicles and equipment including components related to hybrid, diesel, electric and other transportation electrification technologies or alternative fuel systems.
  • Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and testing of NES vehicles and equipment based on NES and manufacturer requirements. Operate and road test all vehicles and equipment to the extent necessary for troubleshooting and performance evaluation. Perform roadside repairs when needed.
  • Rebuild or replace gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, electric motors and generators, inverters, and other drive line components and suspension systems. Source, order, and pick up parts needed for repairs.
  • Rebuild or replace hydraulic valves, collector blocks, accumulators, pumps, motors, cylinders, cables, lift chains, hoses, and gear boxes.
  • Repair and paint steel and fiberglass components associated with vehicle bodies, truck/chassis bodies, mounted bodies, aerial devices, digger derricks, pressure diggers, and other vehicles and equipment.
  • Fabricate tools, parts, wiring, lights, non standard electrical systems and other equipment not available elsewhere. Perform metal repair work. Weld and cut metals.
  • Install, repair, and maintain vehicle and equipment air conditioners, radios, telematics system accessories and devices, back up cameras, laptop system support accessories, and fuel system management components, and various other accessory systems.
  • Furnish and maintain personal tool set.
  • Perform work in a safe manner to protect employees, the public, and property.
Working Conditions

The working environment of this job includes surroundings that are undesirable. There is regular or extreme exposure to multiple disagreeable elements or hazards. This job demands heavy physical effort. Frequently moves or lifts heavy weight objects (50 pounds or more). Requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as standing/walking, climbing, crouching or crawling in restricted spaces for extended periods.

Subject to 24 hour call and shift work.

Special Licensing and Certification
  • Must have or be able to attain a commercial driver's license from state of residence in accordance with state law.
  • Must have or be able to attain a mobile air conditioning certification within six months of job entry.
  • Must be able to pass a physical abilities test.

NOTE: The current minimum rate is $37.69 per hour, and the maximum rate is $53.26 per hour.
