Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and forward thinking Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to join the University Hospitals of Sussex Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate. The post holder should have a special interest in Hand and Wrist with ability to manage all pathologies in elective hand surgery and trauma as per departmental needs.

Currently there is no on call element but post holders may be expected to participate in the Consultant of the Week on call rota. This post is based between St Richard's, Worthing hospital and Southlands hospital, but it is subject to change depending on Trust needs. The successful candidate is expected to travel and provide services from all sites within the Trust.

This post will be a fixed term appointment for 12 months. The successful candidate is expected to be in post as soon as possible.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • Delivering an elective hand and wrist service via clinics, MDTs and operating theatre lists.
  • Running the hand trauma service - operating lists, fracture clinics and supporting VFCs.
  • Engaging with teaching, audit and all other supporting activities necessary to deliver excellent care.
  • Cover general trauma lists and on call as per departmental needs.
  • Doing ward rounds and providing 7 day service.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to deliver an elective Hand and Wrist Service and have the opportunity to build an elective practice, in conjunction with the other members of the hand and wrist team. Elective surgery will be undertaken at St Richard's, Worthing and Southlands hospital.

The appointed candidate is expected to manage all soft tissue and bony hand and wrist injuries across St Richard's and Worthing hospital. They must be able to treat complex carpal injuries, tendon lacerations and peripheral nerve injuries.

Ward rounds run on Saturday and Sunday mornings and also entail out of hours ward cover and participation in hand MDT meetings.

On call commitment: Currently there is no on call commitment related to this appointment but can change as per departmental needs.

Person specification Experience & Qualifications
  • Full and specialist registration (with a license to practice) with the GMC or eligible for registration within six months of interview. If trained in the UK, must have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Trauma & Orthopaedics or be within six months of receiving it by interview date. If trained outside the UK, must provide evidence that qualifications are equivalent to UK CCT (equivalence confirmed by GMC by date of AAC).
  • Higher Degree.

  • Expertise in management of complex Hand and Wrist fractures.
  • Experience managing general trauma.
